Teaching my dog to dial 911

I am trying to teach him to dial 911 using my friends method but he just doesn't get it. My friend told me he taught his dog by rubbing cheeto cheese on the 9 and the 1 and the dog would slowly learn. He seems to love the cheeto cheese and he presses the numbers but when there is no cheeto cheese he doesn't wanna pussh the numbers. This training stuff is hard. [&o]

I truly can't imagine training a dog to push the buttons on a phone, it would be an inexact science at best. I have some involvement in training service dogs, and we have trained them to push "lifeline" buttons--those are the devices that alot of elderly people wear around their necks, they have a very large button, that when pushed, alerts the local police that the person needs a visit in their home.

Maybe a phone with larger buttons would help him?

I don't think that service dogs who are trained to get emergency help are necessarily trained to dial 9-1-1, but rather to push a designated speed dial button. That would probable be a lot easier to train. What is the dog's cue for calling going to be?

LOL!! I've heard of dogs using a speed dial, but never actually pressing the buttons. Hmmm....wonder if I can teach Jasmine and Indy to order a pizza for me, so it would be ready when I get home from work?

I've trained my dog to call a full 10 digit phone number with a similar method. You should be able to train yours to dial 3 digits with no problem.

We were going to teach Marley this one too! Although we were going to teach him to hit the speed dial! We are still working on a phone retrieval though so we won't be working on 9-1-1 anytime soon. [

What I think is even more of an issue is teaching them WHEN to call 9-1-1, not just TO call it...
