Is This Really Mean?

    Is This Really Mean?

We've had our adopted dog now for 6 weeks, and one thing we have discovered is that this guy has a very sensitive tummy.  Anything outside of his Nutro Natural Balance Lamb and Rice and he is exploding.  For training treats, I bake a lamb chop and trim it real well and cut it into little bits.

Our younger dog, Misty, loves her chewies, especially flossies.  We let the new guy try one for a while, with disastrous bowel results.

Misty cries for her flossy time every evening, and so I hold her on my lap and let her chew. She is in heaven when she can get this time with her chewing activity.  I would hate to deny her this acitivity that she's enjoyed since she was a pup.  The new guy sits on my husband's lap and watches.  I feel so bad, is he jealous or hurt, or are am I assigning human feelings too much?  I feel guilty denying him this privilege.

Am I being mean or will he just accept this as the way things are in this house?  Are there any types of chewies for dogs with very sensitive stomachs?  He never had any type of chew things prior to his move to this house.

Zoe can't have any chewies because she has a sensitive stomach too.  Bear gets his chews in a different room, where Zoe can't see.  Couldn't you get a kong and fill it with peanut butter?  Or would that upset her?

I know I may be wrong, but I would feel bad like you do... I think its mean to make him watch with nothing for himself.  I know your not doing it to be mean or anything Im just saying I would worry about the same thing you are.

What about a Nyla bone or something like that.  What about a beef tendon?  Maybe a kong with some frozen pumpkin and yogurt mixed together... I cant imagine those two things upsetting his tummy as they are sometimes used to cure that.

I would try to give him something else during this time that doesn't cause problems with his tummy. Have you tried giving him bully sticks?? If you have and he has no problems with them I think that would be a good thing to give him. Or what the others suggest a frozen filled Kong.

What about letting him chew on a WELL cleaned marrow bone?  He'll have something to chew on and so long as there isn't any meat or marrow on it, it shouldn't bother his stomach.

Bully sticks bother his tummy, we're guaranteed a 3:00 a.m. explosion if he has one.  As for the kong, I have one and have tried stuffing it with peanut butter and he had no interest.  He would love one of Misty's flossies (they are beef tendons formed into a spiral shape, that makes it really easy for the dog to put their paw through and hold onto), but that also brings on an explosion.

I think the cleaned marrow bone may be a good idea.  Of course, if he has one you know the little princess will prefer that to her flossie, so I'd best get a few on hand and boil them down so they are nice and clean.  I'll give that a go.

Before he came here, he had NO privileges at all.  I don't like to assign "human" thoughts to a dog, but sometimes it seems as if he's been so suppressed that he doesn't believe he deserves anything good.  He's so grateful for every pat, every walk, ride in the car, kind word, he's a very needy little guy.  He is starting to understand that love and attention are always available here and he's starting to glow a little bit more.  So, I don't want him to feel any deprivation on the chewie toy thing, but I also don't want to be dealing with 3 a.m. explosions!!  Another chewie toy thing we're dealing with is that when he gets one, he gets very possessive and aggressive about it.  The couple of times he did get something, he was required to sit next to one of us on the couch and give it up every once in a while and then get it back if he sat.

Thanks for your help, I'll try the marrow bones.

DON'T BOIL THE BONES!!!!  Use a spoon to scoop out the marrow, and often you can find marrow bones that have absolutely no meat on them......rinse them off really well in warm water, and if you are worried about germs, give them a white vinegar bath.....that'll disenfect without leaving being any chemicals that could make him sick.

With the kong, you might try stuff like yogart or cream cheese, but please don't FILL a kong with PB....far too fattening.

How about filling up the kong with yogurt and pumpkin, if he will eat that? That's what we give Millie in the kong, because she'll explode also if she has anything but her regular food, or charcoal flavored biscuits, or pumpkin. She actually has a daily pumpkin requirement to keep her from exploding from a medicine she takes. The pumpkin should keep him from exploding, and the yogurt will make it taste better.
Or, how about a marrow bone that is cleaned out, but let your other dog clean it out. That's the only marrow bone Millie can have. I give it to Max first when she is not around, he picks it clean, then I give it to Millie. Nobody gets sick, and everyone is happy that way.

I would not boil the bones because cooked bones are easier to break off into pointy pieces... the raw bones are not nearly as easy to do that with and will also digest much better.

A marrow bone isn't one that they are going to eat.  But, heat will cause a bone to splinter.

If you can't find something else to your puppy to chew on maybe your husband can giver her a play session during this time or a nice long walk.

Glad I checked back in to get some more tips, and now I know not to boil the marrow bones.  Thanks!!!  And, I'll try stuffing the kong with a bit of yogurt and pumpkin, little bit at a time.  This little feller explodes so easily, we're a bit gun shy.  Tonight was obedience training and for his training treats I use itty bits of cooked lamb, and I'm even wondering if that's get him going.

You could try the canned version of his regular food, in a Kong, as well. My dogs LOVE canned food in a Kong.
