    The Dog Listener

Currently I am reading a book called the Dog Listener By Jan Fennell.  I really like her training methods, and my two dogs are in dire need of learning just who the real pack leader is!

Has anyone heard of her?  What do you think of her methods?  Have you used them personally and how well did they work?

Mic is more into the amichien bonding than I, but I think her methods are fine and can't hurt at all.

I thought it was a great read and it definitely helped me get a sense of how to order your household around the premise that your dog views all members of the household as a pack.  I am not a trainer, so what do I know, but I feel like it is a good book to read for background, and it definitely couldn't hurt to do all the things she suggests, like ignoring the dog when you first reunite, eating first, being first in line when you go out...  but, IMHO there is probably a little more to it and I am not sure that I would rely on those methods alone to fix a problem...

This book was recommended to me by my SIL when she got her Rotti pup before we got Ruby.  I found it to be an excellent source of information and put it to practice soon after Ruby came home.  So far, I can't see any flaws with Amichien Bonding - it does wonders for a very active pup, especially the reuniting part.  It calms her down so much.  I would definitely recommend this book to anyone even thinking of getting a puppy. Disclaimer:  do not confuse Jan Fennell with a poster on the board with the same username - from what I can tell by both of their websites, they are not related in any way.

Well, Zoe tends to bark a lot and they both pull on the lead, but those are not what I would call problems.

When I first got Bear, he would destroy anything in my room when I left him alone.  Not just pillows and blankets, but he ate through part of the wall!

I'm lucky he stopped, I have no idea WHY he stopped, but maybe because I ignored him without really meaning to when we reunited for the day.  You know, when you come in and you think "Ok, I need to do this, this, and that"  and THEN I'm like "oh hey Bear, how was your day?"  and enough time has gone by that he's calmed down.  So maybe there's something to what she has to say.

I'm not holding out any hope for Zoe though.  I tried the eating thing with her and she walked away before I could finish the cracker!  I'm thinking they broke the mould with her.  [>:] [/blockquote]
