Harnesses???

For those of you that use harnesses on your dogs rather than collars....What kind of harness do you use? We use a Buddy Belt on Radar. He tends to pull alot when you first take him outside, but this harness has helped him significantly! He never pulls with his Buddy Belt. I have noticed that many people have switched to harness, after collars causing throat and trachea problems. After walks with his collars he'd come inside hacking and coughing badly. We had searched and searched for the best harness for him, and we finally found it. Anyway, I was curious about the variety of harness used and why you decided to use them.

I often (but not always) walk my coonhound on a tracking harness (just a regular body harness, not a no-pull harness). If I put him on his 30 foot line, he has to be in harness because he can get up a lot of steam in 30 feet and could really hang himself when he hits the end of the line. He's normally pretty savvy about where the end is, but if he really gets focused on a scent he can forget himself. I prefer the harness for him even for regular walks because I feel it gives us a better line of communication, from my hand to his whole body rather than just to his neck.

The EW is a no pull harness, and I use it primarily in situations where the environment is new or very stimulating, and I want added insurance that a dog will not get startled, back up, and slip a collar. Or, I recommend them to my students who have a dog that is not yet trained to walk nicely on a leash. These are not for running, just taking a nice walk. If you plan to use a harness for allowing your dog to run with a lead attached, I'd do what houndlove does and use a good tracking harness.
