My pup pie hates the crate

Hi all, I am amazed at all the people who says their pup pie loves the crate.  My pup pie Buddie hates it.  I put him in it at night and when we leave otherwise he is loose in the house.  He is doing great housebreaking but I still don't trust him enough to let him out while we are gone.  I have seen where puppies go to the crate to sleep on their own and think it is their house, not mine he th roughs a fit.  Will it change where he will like it eventually?

A lot depends on location of the crate, if you have it in an isolated area he may just not like being so far away from his pack (you). Also if you punish him by putting him in the crate he might see it as a bad place to be. Keep the crate avalible for him at all times to climb in there. Feed him in the crate, play games with him in there, leave his toys in there. Make it a happy place for him to feel confortable.

How old is he? How long have you been crate training? How did you go about crate training? Does he get anything special when he goes in - if so, what?

Sorry to be such a teacher pet but its puppy not "pup pie" When I think of a pup pie I think of a puppy version of cow pie [:'(]

Some dogs just take natuarally to the crate (Like Lizzie) but some pups just need a bit more coaxing. Try giving him treats while he is in the crate, or maybe a Puppy Kong filled with something yummy. If he is refusing the crate start him out with small amounts of time.

Begin with actually getting him to go in the crate on his own, try throwing a treat and if he goes in praise like crazy.

Also you can feed him in his crate and give him super special treats in the crate. Do not give these treats while he is out of the crate, only when he is in there. Good luck with your pup!

Ohhh it says puppy! I was thinking of pup-pie like a cuttie pie. I know I'm not much of a speller myself but that really threw me off.

When I got Giz at 6 weeks old I would put her in the crate with Georga so she had some company and eventuly she adjusted just fine to the crate. Geroga was already crate trained when I adopted her so she never had a problem with the crate. I bought one that was a lot bigger than she needed so both dogs did well together and then when gizzy was a little older I got her a crate just for her.
