    walking on the leash

i have a 3month old yorkshire terrier that refuses to walk on the leash. She just sits on the ground looking at me. Even when i offer her treats she doesn't move.Does anyone have any tips on getting my dog to walk?

To get my pup to first walk on the leash i used tiny little pieces of hot dog. It was also a two person job. One person held the leash and the other would let her smell the hot dg walk about a foot in front of her call her and then give her the treat when she walked to him. Everytime give her lots of praise, and then we would just keep increasing the distance, and when she would get really frustrated, usually after about 5-10 minutes we would give up and go back inside. It took my pup almost a week to get used to the leash. With my dog it was more the calling to come from the extra person that made the differene, because before that she just didn't seem to understand what the leash meant. You may want to try a harness also, that seems to be successful with small dogs so there neck isn't hurt if they pull on the leash. good luck!

I use a harness for walking; it is easier on the dogs, and I find that it gives me more control if my dog pulls. Is it your yorkie's first time walking or has this behavior suddenly popped up? Sometimes my dog stops walking because she is tired, so we take a short rest. Other times she will sit down and whine because she wants to go another direction I don't allow her to go in (a busy road, for instance). When she does this, I will just stand in front of her with leash in hand, turn my back and wait -- soon, she will get up and start walking in the direction I want to go in.
