    New puppy in house

Hey, I just got a labradoodle puppy named riley. He is 8 weeks old and a package of fun! He always wants to play. I got several questions.

Firstly, He's been here for 4 hours and only peed once...I've taken him out at least 5 times already and he'd just lie down in the grass.

Secondly, He's eating grass, is this bad for him? In the house he coughed up some puke.

Thirdly,  he always wants out of his crate, how do I make him like it?

Lastly, He is very excited and doesn't like to obey commands just yet, should i wait longer?

    Thanks everyone for you input!

im not sure about the first few things..

hmm well about the crate, just give it some time, start feeding him in there and hide special treats in his crate and make sure you dont use it as a punishment

and about the commands, you just got him, puppies can learn commands but you might want to let him get used to you before you start training sessions, he'll probly learn simple commands(like sit, down, come.) once youve had him for awhile

oh yeah, we need some pictures! ill be the first to ask heehee

good luck with your new baby boy!

    Congratulations on your new puppy!

Hm, you've had him for 4 hrs and he's not listening to commands... you're probably going to have to be a leeeetle more patient. [sm=rofl.gif] I highly doubt he even knows any commands yet - puppies aren't born with a knowledge of the English language. Just poking fun... an 8 week old puppy is still basically a baby. You can definitely start training immediately but don't expect too much. At this stage any obedience training you try should be in super short sessions of a couple of minutes each. Try to lure him into position (like "sit") and only give the command when he's doing it - then praise and reward. Remember, "no" is not really a command because it doesn't tell the dog to do anything in particular.

Along the same lines, proceed slowly with the crate. At first just praise and reward him for getting anywhere near it, sniffing it, eating a treat from the crate floor, etc. Lure him in with treats and praise him. Lure him in and shut the door for a microsecond before letting him out. Put delicious things in there so he'll think it's where the good treats are - a dab of peanut butter, a bit of cheese. Personally I don't think it's worth trying to crate such a young puppy the very first night, just keep practicing and try again tomorrow.

Grass is harmless as far as I know. As for the peeing, just encourage him to keep drinking water. Take him out to potty every half an hour or so. If by tomorrow he doesn't seem to be peeing enough - well you probably have his first vet appt very soon anyway so mention it to the vet then.

    Regarding the eating of grass:

As far as I know, eating grass can stimulate the digestive system (much like fibre does in us). Also, if he's eaten something that's not sitting too well, grass will help him get rid of it.

I waited like a week before I started training my pup to do any commands... But one thing I worked on the next day after getting him was just to be calm when I was holding treats, because he'd jump all over me, so I'd just ignore him till he sat there and watched me, then I'd give him a treat.  >^_^<  Of course, Shippo was 12 weeks old when I got him... a little older.
