    New Puppy!

I got a puppy the other day, a free to good home. I wouldn't usually consider this but as soon as I saw the pups,  had to. They were living in a horse trailer coverd with manure. It was terrible. She is half australian shepherd. She is acutaly a red merle, she is beautiful. But I think she is to young. They people I got her from couldn't tell me how old she was. I am going to give her the first set of shots tomorrrow. Any suggestions? And how do I find out how old she is? Thanks.

    She is half australian shepherd.

So is Sioux, the dog in my signature.  My advice, since I own her and a red merle Aussie, is to socialize, socialize, socialize this dog until she is an adult.  Find a positive reinforcement trainer and go to puppy class early - Sequoyah started when she was 10 weeks old.
(More dogs die from behavioral issues than diseases. Just be careful who you socialize with - make sure the other dogs she meets have been vaccinated, and don't let her walk on the ground in "iffy" places, like parks, where a lot of dogs urinate/defecate.)  These are brilliant dogs, and if you haven't owned a herding type before, you are in for a treat.  But, they are dogs that need a job, and if you don't give them one (obedience, agility, etc.) they might make one up that you don't like LOL.
You can find a trainer at [linkhttp://www.apdt.com]www.apdt.com[/link] or [linkhttp://www.clickertraining.com]www.clickertraining.com[/link].
Back in the 70's, I got one of the best dogs I ever had out of a horse trailer.  Good luck with yours!

The vet should be able to give you a good estimate on her age, but DO NOT let him start sticking her with needles.

Dr. Jean Dodds recommends parvo/distemper ONLY at 9, 12 and between 15-20 weeks.  Too many immunizations too young will stress the daylights out of her immune system and can set her up for a lifetime of problems.

Thanks for the advise. We are getting through nights really easy now (hardly any whinning unless she needs to potty). I have noticed that she leans QUICK! Is it just her or is it the australian shepherd in her?

One more question, How much and how often should I be feeding her? I will moisten some dog food and her belly will totally fill up (you know how a full puppy's tummy looks [sm=lol.gif] ) but she will still go for more food from my chihuahua's bowl.

The bloated stomach is likely from worms...so don't count on that to determine if the dog has consumed enough food.  I allow my puppies to eat as much they want for 20 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at lunch and 20 minutes at night (I hand feed ALL meals).  Once they hit about 10-12 weeks I follow the exact recommendations on the bag.

We need pictures!!!  [:)] BTW, Ruby, my avatar, is my 5 month old Aussie.  Her mama is a red solid and her daddy's a blue merle, like the one in spiritdog's avatar.  She had a few red merle siblings and they were gorgeous!

Pics are coming ASAP! I saw her mom and she was a blue merle and her dad was just a "really cute red dog" as the people I got her from say! But right now.... she is Beautiful! lol BTW, she is already housetrained as far as number 2, but she stills pees on the floor. And my problem is she doesn't even let me know. Any suggestions? Thanks!

How about hanging a bell on the door knob?  Every time you take her out, ring the bell and say, "Time to go potty!"  She'll eventually ring the bell herself to let you know when she needs to go out. We did this with Ruby and it works great!  My little 11wk old Golden Retriever puppy rang it the other day (probably by accident!).

Everytime she has a drink, after a little sleep as soon as she wakes up or once every hour take her outside and tell her to do wees or something along those lines so she learns. We done this with Kane and after a few weeks he would go on command. He only had 2 accidents in the house and they were both within the first week of having him. Sometimes it might take a while for them to go but be patient and consistent and always say the same thing.
