8mth old bichon girl still not house trained

We have a 8mth bichon frise called princess.  she still goes everywhere in the house and when she's excited as well.  we work during the day so its been a bit hard. we've tried the 'taking her out frequently, praising, rewards' etc etc.  should she be trained by now? should she be able to hold it during the night and only go in the morning? help we're desperate.

I have a Cairn terrier/Cocker mix, 7 months old, and she's for the most part, housetrained, but she still pees when excited.  I think that at 8 months your baby should be able to hold it overnight (max of 8 hours) -- I would try to have her old it for 6 to begin with then gradually increase.  Do you crate her at all?  I highly highly recommend a crate (I was hesitant about it in the beginning), and also keeping her confined to a small area when she cannot be watched CONSTANTLY (I would also recommend this small area for when you are at work, so that if she absolutely needs to go, she can ... it would be too much to leave her in the crate).  She will slowly learn not to mess in her small area because she'll be stuck with it if she does.  Is there anyone that can let her out just for a quick potty break while you're both at work?

thanks for that.  I dont know what a crate is? Is it literally a small type tray/box for her?  We have started to leave her in the backyard when we are not home.  She has a small dog house and blanket. Would this be making her confused? At night we kept her in the laundry but my husband has started recently to keep her in a crate type thing.

There are specific dog crates -- go to any pet store, and ask.  There are different kinds, as well, and I'm sure they'll discuss that with you.  I think leaving her outside is of course better than locking her up in the crate the entire time you're gone, but it's probably going to confuse her since you want to teach her to go to the bathroom only outside ... and if she's outside she has no choice ... but then she comes back inside once mommy and daddy are home from work ...

Hello, I have a 6 month old bichon named Mr. Snuggles. He is doing great as far as being house trained. He can hold it through the night. He has been able to do that for about 6 weeks now. During the day he uses puppy pads. We decided that we wanted hijm to be indoors all the time so we decided to use pads. He uses them with no problem. For us it works great because we just clean it up as soon as we see it, he also lets us know that he needs a new puppy pad by barking. We also have him in a small playpen when we cannot be watching him. He is a wondeful dog. Do look into getting a crate those work great in helping with training.

Bichons can be difficult to house train, or so I've read.

When you say she's "going all over the house" that sends up red flags for me.  What is she doing "all over the house" if she's not housetrained.  She has turned the whole house into a toilet now.  She needs to be confined to a small area, preferably a tile/linoleum section of your kitchen or where ever you spend alot of time.  By this point there should be some predictability in her peeing and pooping and with alot of work on your part you should be able to get her outside at the right times in order to help her succeed.  She has not earned the right to have full run of the house.  If she's always near you, and see her start to squat, do not scold her, just get her attention with a phrase like "eh" and then gently carry her to her potty spot in the yard and when she is there tell her she is good.  If sometime she is in the yard and does potty, give her a ridiculous amount of praise, more than you give her for anything else, so she can see this is really worthwhile.

The areas where she has peed or soiled the house, you will need to clean them thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser, otherwise she will continue to view those areas as good toileting areas.
