Doggy Diapers?

    Doggy Diapers?

I'm in the process of trying to housetrain my new rescued puppy, and he's driving me nuts with his peeing on the carpet! I go through a big bottle of Nature's Miracle every couple days; it seems like I spend most of my day on my hands and knees scrubbing away his 'accidents'. I watch him like a hawk everytime I let him in the house, but if I even look away for a second, he's probably peeing on the carpet again. Whenever I catch him, I put him outside where he's supposed to potty and tell him to go there, but he'll only go outside if I take him out there and stand over him, or if there's no way for him to get back inside. He also insists on peeing and pooping in the same corner of our living room, even though I treat the area with Nature's Miracle constantly.

Anyway, I was wondering if those little doggy diapers actually helped the housetraining process at all or if they just prevented the urine from reaching the ground when he has the urge to pee inside? Also, is there anything out there that will actually repel a dog from peeing in a certain area, rather than just neutralizing the scent of previous elimination in a spot?

I would say if you can't stop your pup from making mistakes, simply put him in a area that he can't roam around.  If he's not fully potty train, he shouldn't be allow anywhere in the house other then the spot you allow him to be.  When I was potty training JJ, she would often go to the same spot.  I would put the potty pan there and that was it.  At least you know which spot your dog likes going to.  I wouldn't get diapers because it doesn't seem like it's training your dog but allowing him to go at any time.  In my mind I thought the diapers is for dogs who can't control themself or?? As for going outside, you probably just have to keep on continue taking him out and rewarding him with treats, kisses, hugs and make a huge deal whenever he does go potty outside.  Maybe sooner or later he will learn that he is doing the right thing.  I did that with JJ and it worked fine, How old is he?

Try crate training him, or tethering him to you.  If he can get away to pee in a corner, he's got too much freedom in the house.
    Nice little booklet:
"Way to Go - How to Housetrain a Dog of Any Age" by Patricia McConnell.  You can find it on her website: [linkhttp://www.dogsbestfriendtraining.com]www.dogsbestfriendtraining.com[/link].
Diapers or belly bands don't keep the dog from peeing, and they don't teach him where you want him to go.
Remember not to scold him, use the same words all the time ("Outside?"), and reward him with a tidbit or a pat after he does his biz in the right spot.

I agree, crate trainig is most helpful and so is restricting the area where he can be free in the house.  Maybe you should gate off your kitchen, it is much easier to clean up messes on tile or linolium then on carpet.  It does sound like puppy has too much free space.  You also need to take them out every 2-3 hours and after any meals.

I've been using belly bands on my male yorkie now for about 2 monthes.  He had started marking about 3-4 monthes ago and then when we got new carpets installed I decided to try them because I did not want our new carpets ruined. While they do protect the carpets, I agree that he is not getting the training he needs to fix his habit.  I also find that I am washing the diapers ( I have 3 of them) at least once everyday and since I can't wash them with anything else, it really is a waste of water,  money and detergent. And now that I am pregnant, I can smell when he has wet one from a mile away and it makes me so irritated with him! So I am getting him neutered for one and then I am gonna work with him on potty training basics again.  He will be secured in the kitchen and let out to go and treated when he goes outside and see how that works.  So in my opinion, I would work on correcting the bad habits and not put a band-aid on it.

Hmm, I think youre getting into unecessary expenses here. why buy a spray from the store when 50% vinegar and 50% water work miracles on odors? I am one to speak because one of the first days I got Lizzie I had to put her in the bathroom because she had not crate and when I got home the stink hit me walking into the door. A little vinegar, and 15 minutes later NO smell, not even te vinegar smell
