I have a 13 1/2 year old male Standard Poodle and a 4 1/2 year old male Miniature Poodle. The two have been living together quite well (only minor jealousy) until the past 2 months or so. The Miniature has developed a habit of obsessive humping of the Standard. The Standard is in very good physical condition for his age, but is deaf and other sensory functions are a bit impaired so he rarely notices that this behavior is even going on. On occasion (rarely) he will notice and growl and the Miniature stops. At times the Miniature will look at the Standard when he is lying down and will vocalize and whine as if he is asking the Standard to stand up so that he can start humping again. We have tried a number of things. Saying no, physically moving the Miniature off of the Standard, praising when he does not do this behavior, downing him and then praising for the down. At this point, the Miniature will stop if I look at him and start moving in his direction so he knows that I do not like his behavior. I wonder if it has something to do with the Miniature knowing that the Standard is failing and trying to assert himself. Whatever the reason, this has become very annoying to us. Both dogs get plenty of exercise. They walk at least 2-3 miles per day. The Standard is a retired Flyball & Agility dog and the Miniature currently participates in Agility. By the way, the Miniature does not hump other dogs. What do you suggest?
