    14 wk puppy soiling crate

I have a what I believe to be a 14-week-old English Spriger Spaniel/Border Collie Mix that I adopted from a local animal shelter 4 weeks ago.  Piper is as house trained as any dog can be at this age: when accidents occur, they are my mistake.  She can go 6-7 hours in the crate at night without an accident, however I'm having trouble with her during the day while I'm at work.

I'm lucky enough to work from home all but 2 days during the week.  During the days that I go to the office, I crate Piper and my sister comes over at lunch time to let her out, play with her, and take her for a short walk.  Unfortunately, Piper cannot seem to control her bladder the 3-4 hours in the crate between my leaving, lunch, and my return.

At 10-weeks, she was able to jump out of an exercise pen, so I'm not sure leaving her in the kitchen with a baby gate is possible.  However, I don't want her to get in the habit of soiling her crate.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how I should proceed to care for her on the days I have to go into the office?

    Thanks, Sarah

Does she just pee in the crate?  Before she gets let out from lunch or after?  Does she have water in her crate?

Yes, she just urinates in the crate - both before being let out at lunch and before I come home in the evening.  Thankfully, she's never had a bowel movement in the crate.

No, I don't leave water for her in her crate.  When she's out of the crate though, she has free access to water - until about 9 p.m. (as a precaution, I pick the bowl up then so that she can last the 6 hours while I sleep).

I would try limiting her water intake in the morning before you go to work and also during the middle of the day when your sister comes and lets her out.  I'm not saying withhold water from her totally but don't give her very much.  Yes, she should be able to hold it for the 3-4 hours that she's crated but possibly she's loading up on water in the morning and at mid-day and is unable to.  Limiting her water during those times won't dehydrate her.

How big is her crate?  You want it just big enough for her to stand, turn around and comfortably lie down.

She's very cute by the way!

Good Lord, she looks so much like my Ruby.

They do look a lot alike!  So cute, if I do say so myself.  [:)]
