9 week old puppy - questions about biting, etc.

9 week old puppy - questions about biting, etc.

I have a few questions for everyone.
    1. I have a 9 week old beagle boy (and a 2 year old beagle girl). During certain periods, usually like when he is excessively tired and won't lay down, he has a biting fit. I try to put other toys in his mouth, tell him no bite, but he refuses every try and always goes back to biting arms, hands, whatever on our person. I can not walk away because I need to be in the room with him to watch him, so what else can I do? Should I put him in his crate and let him cry it out to go to sleep? I don't want him to view the crate as punishment, though.
    2. Also, how much exercise should a puppy get.  We  have 3/4 of an acre and I have been walking him in my fenced back yard at least 3 times a day. He plays with my older dog once or twice a day (depending on how often she feels like it!) and I try to play toys with him. What else should I be doing?
    3. One more question. He is supposed to get 1/4 cup of dry puppy food twice a day. He always acts like he is starving and wants more food. He acts like this amount is not enough. I try to get some treats during the day when I am "training" him. Should I try to adjust the amount of food for him?
Sorry so many questions, but I am not sure what to do. Any advice and/or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Biting in a 9 week old puppy is not unusual and most likely because puppies are teething much like infants do.  I would  suggest spending some time with your puppy teaching him the difference between "soft" and "no bite."  You won't gain much in this area until they are about 10 to 12 weeks of age when their teeth are mostly in.

I use the term "soft" in a gentle voice.  I have 4 adult border collies and a 12 week old one now.  I wait for the desired results and provide a reward and treats for doing "soft" correctly.

As for crate time, it is always advisable to sit with your puppy for a few minutes while in the crate and talk to him and praise him for doing good.  Puppies will whine and carry on and the object is not to give into it.  If you do consistently, then your pupppy will whine and cry all the time knowing you will come to his rescue.  As heartbreaking as it may sound to let them cry, it has to be done, or you will be doing it for the remainder of his life.

Feeding depends on the breed.  But a rule of thumb for a pup is that you feed them at least 3 times a day.  Some say 4, but once in the morning, once at lunch,  and then around 6 in the evening.  No water after 8 PM.  Your puppy will let you know when they do not want any more food.  As they get older, you will eventually reduce feeding to 2 times a day, and eventually as a adult usually once a day.  I feed my adult dogs twice daily and they do just fine.

I recommend a lot of patience.  It will pay off.

1/4 a cup twice a day??? I am reading that right..?  That would be only 1/2 a cup a day!  For a puppy.... I think thats way too little food.  Bailey is 4 months old and every day gets 1 cup of dry, 1 can, 1 egg, and sardines... this all divided into 3 meals.  I would say give him more if you think hes hungry.

Yes, just have patience, 9 weeks is very young.  He will learn, just give him time, enjoy his puppyhood.

    BTW  Welcome!  Got any pictures!?

Thanks guys. Yes, you read that right 1/4 cup twice a day (1/2 cup a day). Like I said, he acts like he is starving, but this is what the vet said to feed. I would like to feed 1/4 at least 3 times a day and wondered if it would be alright. Right now, he had to be put on a canned dog food (ID?) and Albon. He has normal stool while I feed him chicken/rice, etc, but when I put him back on his dog food, and give treats, he has diarrhea and a tiny bit of blood at the end of the bowel movement. But, this morning he had a normal soft bowel movement, and after he was done he walked a few steps away and then acted like he was going to do more business, but it was a tiny bit of blood that came out. So, the vet now wants me to feed 1/4 can twice a day and no treats or anything else. I feel so bad for him, he really acts hungry. I am supposed to do this until his stools are normal and no blood and then slowly re-introduce the food. Tonight, he has made a sound like coughing, but at the end of the cough he acts like he is trying to spit something up. He acts very healthy and is active for periods during the day and then sleeps a lot also.I feel like he acts like a healthy normal pup, but I am concerned about his blood and now the cough. He has done this cough a few times tonight only, and he did "spit up" what appeared to be water or maybe some phlegm?

My puppy has gotten 1 cup 3x a day since we got her at 8 weeks, and that's still what she's getting now at 4 months. I'll probably start feeding her 2x  a  day when she's 6 months. She is a bigger dog, though, a Lab, but I would think that a Beagle would get more food than that....Sorry, I don't know what to say as far as anything else. Poor puppy [:(]

I know how you feel, Bailey has been having watery poop, its just like brown water coming out... Im about to start a thread somewhere to ask about this because I dont know what to do, maybe we will get some info there.  I do think you should be feeding him more.  Maybe get a second vet opinion on that....?  Seems like so little food!  Im sure if you added the lunch in there everything would be fine.  Hows he doing?

well, other than the coughing that he does, which seems to be when he lays down and started when I started the medicine, his poop seems to be getting better. I could not tell with the last poop he had if there was any blood at the end of it or not. Yes, I am going to post on the health thread, too. Thanks for asking!

I had two thoughts to your questions:

How much you feed depends upon the type of food you are feeding--read the label!!  The vet telling you to feed "1/2 cup" means nothing unless he knows what type you are feeding.  A high protein food like Innova Evo is so dense an adult 10 pound dog only needs 1/3 cup or so a day.  But, a less protein rich food like Artemis, and the adult dog needs 3/4 cup a day.

As for the poo--save a stool sample and have it checked for worms, even if your pup has been wormed the proper amount of times.  The symptoms you describe could be roundworms, very common in pups.

When will the biting stop!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL. My 4 months old puppy loves to bite. I no longer have socks without holes in the toes! I thought about the puppy preschool classes, but they are just so expensive.

It will stop when it ceases to be fun, a way to get attention or a combination of both.  I do feel your pain with the socks. My last litter shredded every pair I own!  Correct (say no bite) and redirect to an appropriate chew thing, then praise like crazy for chewing on IT and not you.  Do not push him away, or in any other way encourage the biting by offering attention...with dogs, as with kids, BAD attention is better than none at all. Wear shoes too...that helps a bit.  Shoes aren't as much to chew on as human flesh.  If he really won't stop, leave the room.  That's what a littermate would do...turn his or her back and refuse to play.  Ignoring has it's merits!

Check with your local HS or breed club for lower cost classes.  They are critical.
