I'm having a lot of difficulty litter training my Chihuahua. We bought him from a pet store at 8 months old (he sat around a long time, no one wanted him) so obviously he needs a lot of training. We're using the crate method, since me and my girlfriend work. The troubles we are having is that he will NOT go in the litter box. We kept bringing him out at 30 minute intervals to pee, and he refused to go unless he was let loose in the bathroom where the litter box is. Should I hold him in the litter and wait him out? I don't think that would be a good idea since he once held his pee for 12 hours when we tried to outdoor train him. Eventually, if he isn't allowed to pee on the floor, he starts whining. We take him to the potty and he won't go, and we put him back in the crate after a few minutes, and he ended up peeing in his crate. I've tried spraying that scented stuff in the litter to get him to go but he didn't seem interested, as well as putting pee soaked toilet paper in his litter box and covering it up. He's left alone for 6-7 hours of the day when my girlfriend and I are at work, besides bed time. I know you are supposed to stop him before he can squirt on the floor, but the trouble is spotting the signgs he's about to pee. He is ALWAYS sniffing and circling, whether he needs to pee or he just soaked the bathroom floor. We have managed to get him to pee in there twice by holding him in after he started on the floor, and we praised him and played with him, but then he started peeing on the furniture (one step forward, 2 steps back). It's only been a week and a half and I know house training isn't an overnight thing, but it just seems like there has been absolutely no progress. Should I hold him in the litter, or is the idea to try and get him to decide to go to the litter on his own? I've tried both, but he really loves that tile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
