Any clue why she is doing this?

Ok, so for the past two days Bella has been doing a wierd thing. She eats...then doesnt poop...so I finally give up and put her in her crate for bed time or when I got to work. Then she poops in the crate at some point during her time in there. Two days in a row. She isnt NEW to the crate, so why is it taking her SOOO long to go and then when she does, doing it in there!

PS...on a more positive note...she pooed in the crate this a.m. but not all the way I guess. So after we came inside from her first mornign potty break, she had to go poo more...she ACTUALLY went to the DOOR! This is my little pain in the rear that wont housebreak ...maybe at 10 mos of age it is FINALLY clicking???

I know my dogs like to get a bit of exercise to "get things moving" so to speak. I try to throw a ball a few times or walk them briskly around the block to speed up the process in the morning. You can also try feeding them 15-30 minutes earlier.

Good luck on the potty issue! I know how frustrating it can be. Actually, the hardest to potty train at our house was my youngest son!

Thanks, but I dont think that is the case. For instance last night, she ate, and had several hours of play time...still no poop. Even after running around the house for hours like a crazy woman. Then she poos during the night in the crate. She also has play time in the morning as well after eating.

PS...I know your pain with potty trianing kiddos too. Try triplets! We had to potty train my triplet step daughters...boy that was fun...They are 7 now and good to go of course, but man that was interesting!

Dogs learn as puppies to elimnate in connection with a substrate.  So being in their usually toilet place is enough to stimulate them to want to go - and if they need to go they look for the usual toilet place.  It depends how often this has happened and for how long for as to whether this is why the dog seems to be waiting to go in the crate before eliminating.  But it might be worth changing or removing the bedding to see if this has an effect.

    CHuffy,

As stated above for TWO DAYS. And as stated in many of my other posts she does not have bedding in her crate as she will eat it.

By the time I got to the bottom, I'd forgotten the 2 days bit, mind like a sieve.  So no hope whatsoever of remembering something from another thread entirely.  Has this dog had a vet check to rule out anything medical?  Weird toilety habits often early warning flag....  has their food or routine changed recently or anything like that?

Have you ever scolded her for pooping indoors?  Perfectly understandable error, but it may mean that she has merely learned to be afraid to poop in front of humans.  If that's the case, or even if not, you can try to set your alarm for a time before she is doing it at night, and take her out.  I know it's inconvenient, but step one is for her to go outdoors (praise and feed her a treat if she does), step two will be to try to acclimate her to doing so at a decent hour.   After you take her out, just quietly put her back in the crate and ignore her.  That way she learns that the midnight potty trip doesn't mean she gets to play, etc.

No and this is a new thing..she usually goes pretty quick after eating. Now its like she is holding it and then going in the crate....for the past 2 days. Its normal poo...nothing odd.

Shippo went through a phase like this, where he flat out REFUSED to go poop when I took him out (And he never got scolded, and never pooped in the house anyway). It got to where I gave him 10-15 minutes of either pooping or screwing around, and if nothing happened, I took him straight back in and put him back in his crate for another half hour to an hour. Then I took him outside again for another 10-15 minutes. I repeated that a lot. Also, when he finally did poop (unless it was bedtime), I played with him a bit afterward, so he didn't go straight into his crate after that (before work etc).

Maybe a dumb question, but how long does it generally take a dog between meal time and pooping urges? Is there a sort of "critical period" to watch for when the need to poop is particularly strong?

I personally would allow a 15-20 period after eating to take the dog out to potty.

    Maybe your dog is constipated??

I hope you're not punishing the dog when she goes in the crate...??

DEFINITELY NOT Punishing her. She obviously CANNOT help it if she goes in there...I doubt she just chooses to. I always allow that amt of time, but its like she is waiting for HOURS! And she has mucus too....my other dog has had icky poo, then normal, now a bit icky again. Neither has had access to anything odd, no contaminated water, etc. ....she's been vaccinated for giardia.. My 3rd dog is totally fine. Could it just be that she is constipated and then when she does go its kinda icky? COuld it be the hooves they chew on?

Hmmm...that's funny..my dog has mucousy poop too??? My vet didn't say it was a concern.

It is possible that your dog is constipated, and just can't go when she really wants to. When it's ready to come out, she's not, so it happens unexpectedly and she does it in her crate or whatever.

Poor girl! I hope she gets better :(  Maybe try some Medamucil and see if that works. Just use it as a trial.
