dig

    dig

Our 8 month old male cockapoo sometimes (but not always) when let outside to do his business will have the tendency to pull up the grass in chunks and chew it and eat it.  Any ideas on how to deter this behaviour?  Will I have to go back to having to go out with him every single time with a leash on him to ensure he doesn't tear up my backyard?  Thanks

Is he digging or pulling the grass out with his mouth?  Is he ingesting it?

What are you feeding him?  Does he have free access to water?

    Does this happen every time?

Does this occur before or after he goes to the bathroom?

He is pulling the grass out with his mouth.  It seems like he's ingesting some of it.
I'm feeding him Innova dry puppy food (in the midst of switching over to the adult dry kibble).  He does have free access to water inside the house.  There is no water outside.
It seems like it happens more during sunlight.  At night I've noticed if I let him out to do his business, he'll do it and come right in.
It has happened both before and after he goes to the bathroom.

I really don't have a great answer.  Best I can say is boredom.  I would give him something else to do out there.  Maybe a Busy Dog Ball or a Talk To Me treat ball or something.

Going out with him on leash will likely help.  It maybe worth it until he breaks the habit.

How about going out with him on the leash and when he gets to the area where it looks like he's going to chew up the grass, say "leave it" or "no" and when he does reward him with a treat?
