    Excited pee

My puppy is doing great with house training. Now the problem is that when I get home in the afternoon, the pees everywhere b/c she gets so excited. I know she can hold it b/c she has been for the past several weeks and she still does, it's the last 2 minutes that are giving us the problem. Any suggestions?

When you get home, do you run over or bend down to pet and cuddle her?

No I immediately take them outside. After she pees, then we play...at least that's how it's been until this week.

Is she crated when you leave?  If she is, don't go straight to her.  Do a normal get home routine.  Hang up your coat, put away your keys, change your shirt.  when she is calm go over there and let her out calmly.  Dont even talk to her.  Snap on her leash and take her outside.  If you eliminate the excitement you eliminate the excited peeing.

She stays in our guest bedroom with our other dog during the day. She starts going nuts when she hears the garage door opening b/c I can see her through the window when I drive up. That's when she pees I think b/c by the time I get  inside, she's done peeing and is waiting at the door for me to let them out.

How do you know that is when she is peeing?

b/c it's still really warm when I clean it up

Then maybe a crate is in order.

well, we're gone all day so I hate to leave her in a crate. Plus, when she was smaller we tried the crate and she went absolutely NUTS, no matter how long she was in there. She's done 100% better since we started leaving them in the bedroom until now. Maybe it's just a phase she's going through but it's a messy one.

    Beth,
This may actually be a potty training issue, and not a case of hyper excitement.  When dogs urinate from excitement we normally see substantially less  urine.  Normally a very small puddle or some piddles (normally just piddles).

What breed of dog are we talking about? What is the age and weight of this dog?

OK, yeah I've always thought excited pee was just little dribbles but that's the only time she does it. She's been just about 100% reliable for the last few weeks so I just figured that was what it was. She is an Irish Red & White Setter, 4 months old, probably about 25 lbs. by now.

I would change up the situation on the dog and see if you get the same reaction.  Try a different room (preferably smaller).  Or an Xpen of sorts.  Of course, some solid crate training would remedy the problem.

If you are not careful, this will quickly become a habit.
