    Crate problems

I need some help.  I have a Shih Tsu 5 month old puppy.  She is doing good with house training, but when we put her in her crate when we go out she poops in her crate.  We have made it small and taken out bedding.  Before we put her in we take her out and most times she has done all of her business but still goes in the crate.  I don't know what to do.  I anyone has any suggestion I would appreciate it.  thanks

I am certainly no expert, but that sounds EXACTLY what we went through when Maxine was a pup. We finally figured it was probably separation anxiety. In our case, we took our extremely obedient well behaved golden to obedience class. She went through 3 sessions until they closed for the winter, and it seemed to give her confidence or whatever it was she needed to deal with it. She was over a year when we finally decided to try her out of her crate when we were gone. She was better out of the crate than in it.

She is now almost 10 (her birthday is 12/26) and to this day she HATES the crate. She has had knee surgery (2 times) the first time we crated her as we were told to do, and boy did she get a combination of mad and depressed. This time we gave her a bedroom and gated it off, she has been much happier. The only time she isn't put out by the crate is if both are dogs are in it together.

    Just my thoughts

Also remember 5 months is still young. Don't lose hope. It may work just giving a smaller part of the house. Each dog is an individual, and of course they can't tell us what is up. We have to try to learn to listen.

    Good Luck!

if the crate is too big some dogs will eliminate in a corner thinking it isnt close enough to their "den"
