    Puppy diggin holes in ground

Can anyone explain to me why my 5 month old puppy digs up holes in the ground?  It's getting really annoying and I would like to know if there's any methods to stop this behavior.  We play with her all the time and she gets walks everyday, basically what I'm trying to say is we do everything we should.  Thanks for any help.

Sometimes they do it out of boredom, sometimes they just like to dig! I have a few that will dig in the summer to make a cooler spot to lay in and a few younger ones that just seem to do it for fun.

Is she a hound or terrier?  Pretty much a breed trait in them.
What I suggest is to create a sandbox - bury milkbones or Charley Bear treats in it, and "help" her dig them up.  When you find her digging elsewhere, redirect her to the sandbox.  Tuck the occasional treat there, and it becomes self-reinforcing for her to dig in that spot instead of the petunia patch LOL.  You won't stop most diggers, so the best thing is to have them dig in an approved spot.
If you are in a warm climate, dogs' instinct tells them to dig a "cooling spot", so it may help to put the sandbox in a shady area.

Anne's sandbox idea is the best.  Some dogs will just dig.  Often it is out of boredom, but some are diggers by nature.  We have a walkout basement, and under my back deck my shepherds have ALMOST dug down far enough to add another entrance.  [:@][:@]

Last weekend I finally gave up, fenced off under the deck and made them a sandbox.  Should have done that long ago, but I really didn't want them digging anyplace.  But, what I want them to do or not do and what they are going to do when they are outside playing alone are sadly two different things.  You can use his poop to fill the holes and that might deter him, but I'd vote for just making the sandbox and being done with it.  Much less stressful for everyone.
