8 Months She should be accident free right?

OK, what are we doing wrong? At 8 months she should be totally trained right?

I found this site whieol doign research bcause at this point we really don't understand what we are doing wrong and are afraid we have "missed the boat" and now own a dog that is not and will never be house trained.

I will try to provide as much information as possible so sorry if it's to much but we I;m hoping some can find somehting we are doign wrong so we can turn thgins around or have a million peopel tell us to relax we're overreacting..

We have an 8 month old (as of Sept 7th) Miniature bulldog. From the day we owned her (exactly 12 weeks) we crated her both at night and while we were out (never for more then 4.5 hours usually 4) and trained her to ring bells hung by the door when she needs to go outside. When we first got her every 45 minutes or so I would bring her to the door ring the bell with her paw and bring her outside to the same spot. Or if we "caught her in the act" I would SAY "no" (not yelling at her, just saying it) and pick her up, bring her to the door, ring the bell with her paw, and then bring her outside to the same spot. I did this for about 4 weeks and then gradually increased the time - now, when she is out of her crate and has free range of the house, she rings her bells when she wants to go out.

Her normal schedule is M,W and F my wife wakes up at 5:30am and ;puts her in bed to snuggle with me until I wake up at 6:15 - she loves to snuggle, crawls under the covers, puts her head on the pillow and everything - it's really cute. I know, we spoil her. Anyway, I wake up at 6:15ish and feed her while I make coffee (sometimes she eats, some times she doesn't, sometimes she eats half then and half later) to take on her 20-30 minute 'morning walk' and then she gets the run of the house while we get ready. Between 8-8:15 she goes into her crate (roughly 3 feet long by 1.5 feet high) with a pillow or blanket, a few toys, a bowl of water and the rest of her breakfast if she didn't finish/eat it. I come home between 11:45 and 12:15, take her for a 15-25 minute walk (she usually goes #1 and #2) and she hangs out with me while I eat lunch. At roughly 1-1:15 she goes back in her crate until I get home at 5-5:15. Weather permitting we walk her for at least 30 minutes after dinner and she either hangs by my feet or we play for the rest of the night in the living room until we go to bed anywhere between 9-10. She snuggles with my wife in bed until I turn off the TV and put her in her crate between 10:30-12.

This was her schedule, 5 days a week, for the first 2 months of her life with us and now, for the most part (90% of the time) she is good but every once in a while she will #2 in the crate.

I should also note we did a basic obedience class and is pretty good with Sit, Paw, stay and come - at least if you have a treat in your hand and there aren't too many distractions. She is easliy distracted - the people at her Day-Care/Vet noticed it too. They have to take her out by herself after playgroups so she can go tot he bathroom.

For the last 2 months or so she goes to day-care on Tue and Thurs. Again, we felt bad she was spending so much time in her crate and this way she gets to play with play with other dogs and people. She was bit shy when we first got her and between training, day care and us bringing her everywhere on the weekends She is a very social, well behaved dog and has many friends - both K9 and human. Besides, she loves it! She knows when we pull into the parking lot and gets very excited and after we pick her up she goes home, eats and sleeps most of the night.

We started to feel bad that she was in the crate so much so last week we started to let her sleep on a big pillow/dog bed on the floor by the bed. The first night we did this I had brought her for her walk after diner and she ended up falling into a pond (she doesn't like water/swim and the pond was covered with allergy so she just walked out onto it thinking it was grass or something) I took her straight home and washed her but I'm sure she swallowed some of it. She is fine but that night and the next day she had diarrhea. Since then she has been great at night with the exception of waking us up by ringing the bells because she wants to go out and or get on the bed so last night I took those away - she great, She still gets up and walks over to the bed to see if it's "snuggle time" yet but goes back to her bed after 5 or 10 minutes.

She is perfectly healthy (22lbs or so) runs, plays, eats (with the exception of the morning but we are switching from Science Diet to Innova and hoep that will adress that) with the best of them. The only other thing this is puzzeling is her fascination with grass. She eats it, rolls in it and anything in between. We asked the Vet and he said most of the time they eat it because their stomach is upset but she eats/plays/rolls in it pretty consistently and has no sign of her stomach being upset so...

OK, that should cover it I think, Again, sorry if that is WAY to much info but I'm at the end of my rope. We thought at this point we could start letting her stay in our kitchen for short periods of time until we could trust her and just give her free reign of the house while we are gone.

Are we rushing things? Do we have one of those dogs that can't be house trained - if there is such a thing. Or even worse, did we do a bad job training her? I have heard once they get past a certain age if they aren't house trained it is nearly imposable to train them.

HELP!

ohh and TIA!

Out of curiosity how old was she when she left her litter?

Is she spayed?
• Gold Top Dog
12 weeks, yes, she was spayed a little early as well because she had an umbilical hernia so they did them both at the same time...

Welcome to the forum!

I read your entire thread and I'm not sure if I understand. You say she isn't housetrained? She sounds like she is, but has an accident now and then. Is it more frequent then that? Does she go when in the house when  you're home?

Have you thought about feeding putting her food down and leaving it down only for a certain amount of time and if she doesn't eat it by the end, then oh well? I used to free feed Ash, but because of I was never able to tell when she would need to go to the bathroom, I stopped doing that. It took about 3 days for Ash to get the hint that she only had about 30-40 minutes to eat what was in front of her (it's usually gone in 5 minutes). Now, I can tell you at exactly what times Ash will have to go potty. [:D] I think that's amazing, but I really can.

What I do now is I leave Ash with her breakfast in a kong when I leave. When my mom comes at 11:30 to let her out to go potty, Ash goes. Then my mom comes again at 2:00 and lets her out again. She goes again. I get home by 6 and let her out and she goes again. She eats at 7:30 and by 9:00 she has to go again. Then that's it for the night. Ash eats Innova and it did make a difference in her stools and the amount of potty trips she had to take.

She goes in her crate sometimes - actually it seems to be getting worse. The last two days I go home at lunch and she has poo'd in her crate. She doesn;t have accidants while we are home, she rings the bell, goes outside, does her thing and goes back in.

I just thought that at 8 months she would have my confidance to start leaving her in the house for short periods with the end goal of her having free roam of the house while we are gone.

Not sure if my expectations are off or not...

I'm sorry. I think I misunderstood your first post. When you said "housetrained" I thought you meant potty trained. If you meant housetrained as not being able to let her free roam, then that's different.

Ash is a year and half and I still can't let her free roam. She's still too much of a puppy and she will destroy things. She's perfectly potty trained, but just can't be trusted to free roam. She'll chew books, eat some clothes, play in garbage. It's too much for her so in the crate she goes.

If you did mean potty training, then maybe her crate is too big for her? She shouldn't have room to go potty on one end of the crate and then go to the other end and sit or lay down.

I don't think your expectations were too high, but maybe you should just give her some time. She is still very young. It sounds like you've done a great job with her. You just started letting her sleep outside of the crate so maybe you just need to keep doing what you're doing - baby steps.

Can we see a pic of her?  How big is a miniture bulldog supposed to get?
• Gold Top Dog
Sounds like a cutie! What's her name? I'm just going to throw some ideas at you since nothing really leaps out as a capital-P problem in your post.... I just have two more questions, how often has this (poop in crate) happened, and is the poop mushy or soft or oddly colored? Actually, one more question, did this happen before the pond incident?

I think it's probably worth bringing a stool sample by the vet's office. You don't even have to make an appt or see the doc, just drop it off and have them test for parasites and call you with results. She could have something like coccidia or giardia that wouldn't be obvious to you except in the form of runny stool.

You mentioned that you are switching foods right now. It's possible that this is causing some digestive upset that will be resolved once the switch is complete... it's also possible that the Innova doesn't agree with her, though again this points back to the question of whether her poop is abnormal in any way other than the fact that it is in her crate. [:D]

The grass thing... don't worry about it. It sounds from your description that she just likes the smell and taste, I don't think this indicates a health problem. And my last bit of advice is don't believe the hype - ANY dog of any age can be housetrained... the only real obstacle to this would be some sort of unresolved health issue.

Ashland: Sorry, by house trained i did mean Potty trained - aka - go out side all the time no msitakes, accidents or what have you. We are gong to ry changing her food to a more natural brand and see if that helps...

Hollysmom: Always happy to show of our baby girl. Lets see if I can figure our how to do this...

Our Easter cards. She is about 14 weeks old..

I know, we're cruel huh, she looks none to happy!
• Gold Top Dog
She is so cute!!!!! I love that picture!!!!

When I switched to Innova, it helped Ash's stools a lot. She went less and it became much easier for me to detect when she would have to go.

I can't tell, is your pup a french bulldog? she's cute

It's a lot of information... and yet I don't see a straightforward description of the problem. Can you be more concise about what exactly is going on?

The only thing that leaps out at me at this point is:

1. You say she poops in her crate. (Is this the primary problem?)
2. You also said she gets left with the other half of her breakfast in her crate, or the whole meal if she doesn't eat it.

I certainly would not be leaving her for many hours in a crate with food if she poops in her crate. It's an opportunity to "reload" if you know what I mean... she should be going in empty and not getting any opportunities to be anything but empty.

Pooping in crate is a gross habit indeed. Where did you get her? How big is the crate? Are you free feeding her in general, or just breakfast?
• Gold Top Dog

Sorry for my ramblings Fisher - but you got it right. The poop in here crate is the main issue. She was doing so well for about 4-6 weeks and then all of a sudden started to revert back. Even when we let her finish her breakfast in her crate she was good. Now, out of the blue, about 2 weeks ago, she started. She doesn't pee in it, just poop.

I think we may have found the culprit though - thoughts, advice and experiances are welcomed and encouraged:

I was picking her up at day care and realized she started this a few days after we had picked her up at the Kennel (day care is at the same place as the kennel and vet). So I asked the Kennel tech yesterday if she goes on the floor or when she is in her crate (usually she spends her time in-between play groups in what they call the "prep room" with the vet and kennel tech's but some time's she goes in to a crate for nap time) and she told me she had not that day but has in the ;past and not to worry allot of dogs do blah blah blah.

So, I think we inadvertently trained her that it's ok to do it at Day Care/Kennel but not at home and after spending a week at the kennel she probably doesn't understand the difference in the crate at the Kennel vs. the crate at home. The changing of her food I'm sure didn't help but she started before and we started replacing her new food slowly - 1/4 cup at a time.

We have decided to do the following and see if helps, again thoughts, advice and experiances are welcomed and encouraged:
1) Put off changing her food for a week or so
2) No more pillows blankets etc in her crate - feel bad she's just on the metal crate liner but she sleeps on the tile floor so...
3) Trying to decide if we can at least feed her less in the morning and more at night if not go to a once a day feeding and do it at night (is it better to feed small dogs twice a day?). I also think we have been feeding her too much (2 cups, 1 in the am and 1 in the pm). The dog food bag (Science Diet) says that we should be feedign her 2 1/3 cups but lm going to do some research and ask the people at the vet. She is a 8 mo and 22.5 lbs miniature bulldog - anybody have any thoughts ont he ammount.

I know if we go to a more natural food like Innova we should be able to feed her less and her output will be less since she there is less filler but I think we should address the poo in the crate issue before switching the food. Any thoughts on that?

And 4) which neither of us wants to do because she loves it so, is stop day care.
