    house breaking issue

    hello,
we have a 3.5 month old mini dash that we got about a month ago. she has been doing good with the house breaking since the first nite but it has not improved. she got the main part very quickly but then just leveled off. what happens is we want her to pee and poop inside on her pad. but only on her pad. she lives in the kitchen and only in there when we are not around. when we are around she pees and poops on her pad- no problems. (we gve her a treat and praise her etc) but when we are both at work or we are sleeping its a hit or miss. but mostly on the kitchen floor.we don;t like the idea of crating her. from what i can see it seems like if she knows she isn't gonna get a treat she doesn't care and pees and poops anywhere. how can we teach her to pee on her pad even when we are not around???

When are you usually away? Does your pup eat three times a day? Is there a water bowl for her to have access to 24/7? Try to figure out when your dog usually "goes''. Chances are, he'll need to relieve himself about 5 minutes after every meal, and every 3 hours in between.
Try not to be away from home for more than two hours at a time, so your dog doesn't have a chance to pee outside of his box. Another suggestion is to slowly wean him off the treats. Only give him one treat a day, and gradually, you can slow the treat flow down to one every other day (or for peeing purposes, at least).

As for teaching him how to pee on his pad, once you see him sniffing around, carry him to his pad. Chances are, he'll pee there. If you're lucky, you'll have his schedule figured out just fine and he won't try to pee in the Kitchen. Once he gets into the habit of peeing on his pad, he won't pee anywhere else.

    Good Luck!

she eats 2 times a day and doesn;t have access to water when we are away (to stop from peeing) and even if we are not away for long during the day there is also night time when we sleep. we have done a schedule and after her meals she goes in about 10 minutes. but inbetween there is no pattern. it is all random. sometimes she goes 3 times between meals, sometimes never, sometimes 2 back to back then nothing etc.

If you won't use a crate, then get an exercise pen.  It's really not fair to leave a pup without water for hours on end.  At least with the ex pen you can set it up so that the pads are in one area that becomes the potty area.

I agree with using a crate/pen.  We have two mini doxies who are 4 and 5 months old and they are crate trained.  The advantage to using a crate/pen is that they have to live in it, so they won't potty in it. This does mean that you might have to let your pup out during the night to potty for a while, but eventually your pup will adjust.  Our pups had to be let out during the night for a week or two but are now sleeping through the night.  We also take up their water once we see they are going to bed for the night.  We free feed our pups and take the food up at about 10pm.  They usually go to bed around 11pm.  Oh, and if you do decide to use a crate or pen, do not put the pee pad in there with them.  They need to have a seperate area for play/food/water/sleep than for using the bathroom.

One question about the pee pad.  We used one while we  teaching our pups to go to the door.  Does your doxie pee/poop right next to it, or away from it?   Ours always intended to use the pee pad but would relieve themselves in the vacinity of it.  Very frustrating, I know!
