thinks outside is playtime when its potty time

my new pup is having problems he is 4 months old...wehn i take him out on schedule (guessing) about every 5 hours. sometimes when i take him out he just plays...i dont want him to associate potty time with playtime everytrip we go outside. i dont think he understands "potty" or "hurry up", but i use it whenever he shows signs, and after during praise. hopefully thatw will help. but how can i either better guess his potty times, or just get him to pee? does walking help?

I have a 5 month old puppy and she sometimes does the same thing. Unfortunitely the "waiting game" is some thing you have to do. Sometimes it can take up to 20 minutes until puppy is ready to go potty.
I let out my daughter's 2 puppies, both ages 3 months, and all three play together. Usually each puppy pottys right away. Sometimes I separate them to double check that "someone" has to go without interuption playing. After a while if they don't go, I bring them inside.
If your puppy plays outside he probably doesn't have to go even though you think he does. If he stop playing and starts to sniff, then you know he's got to do his thing. Good luck !

sometimes people accidently teach their puppies that if they delay/don't pee then they get to stay outside and play longer. This often happens with people who take the pup out, and the second the pup

otties they march the pup back inside. A better strategy is to take the pup out on leash to a designated potty area and walk back and forth until the pup pees. Be very boring. No playing. When the pup goes, you praise and initiate play. Even if you're short for time make sure you do something fun after the pottying. After awhile you have a pup who pees as quickly as possible so he can get to the fun part. Once he's consistently peeing immediately on command then and only then can you occasionally start skipping the play time afterward.

I'm having a problem sort of similar, but not entirely... Our pup will go outside and just lay in the grass, not doing anything save for munching on it a little. She won't mess in her crate so far, but she won't go outside either.. She hasn't urinated or defecated all day, and we're starting to get a little worried..
