Humans, dogs, and the "get-it" factor

Ooo!  I am so guilty of that, that is the backyard.  That is, my dogs sole form of exercise to be in the backyard and play, play, play.  On the weekend they get a car ride to the lake but they all stay in the car and have heads out the window looking at the ducks, while I feed the ducks.   I don't see walks as a good form of exercise but as good form of exposure to the outside world and maybe different situations if they come up.

So when you are out there walking is that not a good form of excersice for you? i need to say that to all the senior citizens that i see at 7 am walking outside my house [;)]

Yes, you are absolutely right that it is good exercise for me.  And until I came to this forum I thought it was good exercise for the dog, but members convinced me otherwise.  I am not like CM and can take my entire pack for stroll.  Time-constraints and practicality is my hinderance from taking the dogs on separate walks.  I have to make accomodations.

ETA:  a qualification-if the foster is overweight and that overweight condition effects his play, I do walk.  I have had 2 fosters in this condition.  At the opposite end which is where the dog is emaciated (most of them come this way), sometimes pretty bad, I do restrict heavy play in favor of weight gain.

So what do you think of taking a different approach to 15-20 people that are having behavior problems with their dogs?

I am starting to get the CM way of exercise, discipline, and *what is that last thing*.

    affection....

I am not getting the order of animal, dog, breed, personality----yet.  The book is suppose to be on its way a week ago but has not arrived yet.

Cesar'sWay shoudl help you a bit more in understanding this but go into reading this book DPU with an open mind. Lots of people get dissapointed thinking it is a "training guide" of sorts when it is not. If you are looking JUST to have a better understanding of CM and his philospohy, then the book should help.

My two would be SO upset if I left them in the car in this situation.. poor JJ would be so wound up wanting to go play with the ducks!!

Unfortunately I think that most people share your view. Walks are highly under valued and can make a world of difference in your dogs behavior. It also helps establish trust and a relationship between owner and dog... but that is just MY opinion...   [8|]

Not sure where this came from but I think most people would agree that a combination of walking and other forms of exercise is the way to go. I know several people who have mulitiple dogs..too many to walk at once so they walk only 2 or 3 a day together so that at least all of them get walks several times a week. Perhaps this might be something you would be interested in trying at somepoint to see if it worked for your situation.

Thats because the people here are actually interested on working with their dogs, but in general people just have dogs just for the fact of having dogs

Very true. And many people will only do what feels good to them and is self rewarding. Some are very open to a bit of advice and are willing to make some changes. Unfortunately, based on my own personal experience, these people are in the minority. Sometimes you can impart a lot of good information to a receptive person by just having a casual conversation, rather than making a "sales pitch" right off the bat. One of the days I was in the vet's last week when there was less chaos, I was able to do just that. Now, this woman has my phone number and it's up to her to call me.

Some people complain that their dogs dig holes in the backyard or chew furniture, i tell them that they need excersice (since they dont take them out because they have a big "backyard" according to them), what do they do? nothing, is easier to complain more than taking the dog out everyday, the strange thing is that if the dog shows a new bad behavior they act like if i never said anything before, is a vicious circle

Welcome to the club! You are learning where you can help, where you run into walls, and the most difficult part of helping a confused or troubled dog...getting through to the owners.

Many folks will not put their dogs needs first or change their own behavior until things are very bad and the dog is completely out of control.

Helpful bits of information are fine, but you quickly learn where to put your efforts and where not to waste them.

Wasn't this an excellent opportunity to converse with the lady on how you got your dogs to be so well behaved. Seems like a nice lady and would have accepted advise and then some. Might have even gotten you a tip or two.

It would have been... but the screaching dog was so deafening that neither she nor I could actually hear each other - I could only see her mouthing her appologies. I certainly wasn't going to go any closer to be heard with that dog frothing at the mouth. [:D]

Like some members say is a "dead horse" it does not matter what i say it goes in from one ear and it goes out by the other right after, people are lazy, they like to set up mental walls themselves and that way have an excuse for not doing anything, they actually are whilling to accept the bad behavior better than do something about it

I can tell one for certain, can't recall the others, but I can not reference the thread that it was discussed.  May be in new thread the subject could come up.

Well i dont want a direct quote, i mean, why do you think that walking is not a good excersice for the dog and only a way to "show the world"? your answer will be a reflection of what other members told you

What made sense to me is level of exersion the dogs expends during play.  In my dogs backyard time:
….Dogs got to walk.  Dogs got to prance.  Dogs got to run.  Dogs got to leap.  Dogs got to pivot.  Dogs got to chase.  Dogs got to be chased.  Dogs got to hide.  Dogs got to stalk.  Dogs got to pounce.  Dogs got to play tug-o-war.  Dogs got to play fetch.  Dogs got to shake.  Dogs got to wrestle.  Dogs got to bark.  Some dogs run the agility course.  And at the end, the dog has to p and poop.

Ok, ok, and your dogs have not any kind of behavioral problem?

Generally no, that is... what may be perceived as a problem is actually allowed by me.  For the Pittie mix, he is still pinging the boundaries.  And this approach is best for the SA hound.

BTW, does CM have a video on true SA dogs?  I would be very much interested in that.

Ok if it works for you that way then is fine, most of the people just let their dogs be by themselves in the backyard and thats it

I have seen CM dealing with SA twice but i haven found any videos from those episodes so far, sorry

Glad to see you decided not to go through with your good-bye.  You add a lot of insight to this forum

If I am not out there sitting and watching them, they would just mill around.  I guess I got cool dogs, always trying to entertain me.  Now you understand why I don't need cable and thus not being able to watch the Dog Whisperer show.
