Man, I can so relate!
I think this escapes folks who have never had to deal with this type of dog. I also think it is this type of dog that constitutes Ceasars "pack" and why he excersises them so much. I don't have a chow but mine is so independant and forward driven, walking is his only motivation for anything. Treats, toys, affection, have never worked. He doesn't care about such stuff.
And also, mine, even at age 12 would make a go with Ceasar's pack and his excersise program. He might fall over at hour 3 or 4 and have to take a quick nap. But trust me, he would get back up and carry on.
You have one end of the spectrum saying +R, then the other saying, I'd put that dog in it's place. Or under trained and under socialized. I get that one a lot. So no, not everyone understands.
I think unpredictability comes with an independant/confident dog. Zeus can be friendly & sociable, meaner than a junk yard dog ....and all points in between....
There is good news though. Mine began to mellow out at about 10-11. I spent a lot of time running the woods during those 10 years...so I am a fan of the "a tired dog is a good (manageable) dog".
Sorry for hi jacking the thread. But I always read your posts with great interest because I understand where you are coming from.

but I do believe that SOME dogs, most especially these independent, "difficult" breeds, like a chow, sometimes need a little extra ummph to get their attention, to get them to stop doing something or whatever. I don't know if everyone understands this like some of us but there are things that would absolutely THRILL almost any other dog, but wouldn't even get a glance from my dog.
