    Dog Pees on Her Bed

My dog pees on her bed.  Not when she has no other choice, almost as a marking type of thing.  I just made her a new bed, she scratched at it for a few minutes and then peed on it!  She has access to go outside and she is housetrained so I don't think it was just that she had to go.   She wouldn't have peed on the floor if the bed wasn't there.  She has done this with other beds in the past but we thought she was just too young to hold it at the time.   She is 8 months old and has no other bladder/urinary trouble.  Any ideas?  I want her to have a soft place to lay in the living room but I don't want to waste my money on beds she is going to ruin by peeing on them!

You could just try getting her a small area rug to lay on - maybe she wouldn't perceive it as a bed.

Thanks, I'll try that.  She also has a chair that she used to sleep on and she never peed on that.   She has been sleeping on a towel for the last few nights and that has stayed dry if not completely in one piece :)

The urine smell makes them want to keep peeing in that place.  You have to use non-ammonia, pet friendly cleaners.  8 mos. old is still a puppy too!

    Hi dogslife,

I understand what you are saying but this was a brand new bed, no urine smell for sure!   I do use Nature's Miracle when cleaning up after her.  Thanks!

Sounds like marking to me then.  Would you consider crate training?  It would be easier to clean.  Perhaps a hard surface for bedding may be a better option-at least til she grows up a little more.  You dont have to lock them in it, but use as you would use a crib for a baby.  Just a special place for the pet. Usually dogs love having a crate of their own.

Hi.  We do have a crate for her, but I admit, we've been really bad about crate training her.   I have been thinking about putting more effort into it, so we'll see how that goes.   I agree that a crate is a great thing for travel, safety etc but I feel bad putting her in the crate during the day when she doesn't need it for house training reasons.   She has obviously shown she has no problem peeing where she sleeps!  (We currently have her in a 10x10 room off of our kitchen while we are at work...)

Lol !  Glad it is not a problem!! [;)]

You could just get her to sleep in the crate and leave the gate open.  But you are so right, it makes travel safest...but you need to use the door latch then!

That is a beautiful baby!!   I am sure she will catch on to enjoying a clean dry bed sooner or later!
