Questions about NILIF

Right now we are having an issue, my DH uses "go ahead" as the release command and I use "OK".

doesn't that drive you crazy? dogs are so much easier to train than DH's are.

Jojo.  You are doing a good job with the NILIF it seems.  But remember, it is not about "what" command you give him (sit or laydown or paw) make it one command each time and mix it up with feeding if you want.  I idea is that he does something for his food.  Anything WILL WORK FINE.  I make my dog sit each time, now he sits automatically when he see his food bowl coming.  So just to bust chops if he sits I also ask for the paw.  Or sometimes if he sits without me asking, I ask him to come by me and then I say sit.  Only because I want him to always think he is getting feed because I am happy with his behavior.  As for in and out of the door.  When I first started NILIF I use to stop at almost every door way in my house when my dog followed me around.  If I were going into the bathroom I stop, tell him to sit and walk into the bathroom.  Sometimes I allowed him in with me (behind me) and other times I would have him sit and stay and hopefully he was waiting for me to come out.  If he wasn't no big deal, I did say or do anything to him.  However, after a while he would stay and wait for me to come out.  It really is way of life for you and him and sticter in the beginning and less strick after he has come around.  Like I have mention before in other posts to you, it is all about consistancy, consistancy and consistancy.  You will see mild progress at first and more and more as time goes on.  It took about 4 - 6 months for my dog to really change and be trusted but he did and he is wonderful.  And..  he is only 1.5 years old he started his bad behaviors at 8 months.

And, if issues pop up later you can step it up again for awhile.  For instance, if Willow is ignoring commands that she knows, we will take away bed privledges and maybe even bedroom completely and couch.  And, at this point, I don't always make her sit at every door but if she's acting up, then she has to follow it very strictly.

One thing I learned with my dog with NILIF and just pure obediance training is that dogs don't generalize well.  Your dog may have a stellar "stay" at dog training class, but be completely dumbfounded when you ask him do such a thing in other environments.  Humans will get frustrated and think,"he knows this command," when he only may know it in one environment.

Not sure if that might be a component of this, but something to ponder...
