There's so much that you can do to entertain your dog.  Mental games are great: hide and seek, "where is it" types of games things like that.  you can also try teaching new tricks, or take behaviors that he already does and put commands on them (bow, roll over, play dead, pray.) The best thing about playing/teaching your dog is that it will strengthen the bond that you have with him.

There are toys and such that you can get that make the pups use their minds but it all depends upon how persistent your dog is.  Also try varying where you walk, sometimes a walk down a new street, or down an unfamiliar path can stimulate them.

    1 word: Kong

No really, these Kong toys are absolutely great you stick some peanut butter inside and the dog is into it for hours on end (or at least until they run out of peanut butter)

There is another one similar to this, but it has multiple holes and you stick dog biscuits in them.

You can also get him a mirror if hes into reflections, just make sure to secure it so he cant break it.

Please don't use more than a DAB of pb in the kong.  It's very fattening.  I use pb to "seal" the ends after filling them with all sorts of goodies.

How many times a day do you walk him?

Also use your commands (come, sit, down etc)  every now and then, that way you'll keep his mind stimulated, plus training him (keeping you in controll)

sounds like he needs more excersise..nothing is worse than a bored dog...how long do you walk him for? Try to go on longer walks with him, and more than once a day if you can. Also try some new toys with him, like lizziecollie suggested, kongs are great and keep them busy for quite some time.

I had to work on obedience commands with my border collie/beagle mix (she was reactive on walks) and there are only so many hours in a day, so for a while we did obedience instead of walks.  I was so worried that Zoey would be hyper without the walks, but amazingly she seemed even more worn out by learning new things!  I really underestimated the power of obedience!
