I am having the worst time with a 9 month old puppy. We've had him since the first of December. He was a nice, quiet puppy -- housetrained, would whine some when in his crate but never barked. Almost 3 weeks ago, we got another of the same breed (Silky Terrier). We try to spend equal time with him and her, but he is so jealous. He now barks like crazy and pees in his crate.
He also pratically attacks her when they are out together. She is 4 pounds and he is 10. She doesn't put up with it and is frequently the chaser -- not the chasee. I call her a shark, as she closes her eyes, opens her mouth as wide as she can and lunges at him (usually toward his throat, bottom lip or hind legs). Sometimes though, he pins her down in a show of dominance and he's even grabbed her by a leg or ear and dragged her around some. We try to keep them seperated and will even get them out of their cages at different times to keep them away from each other. When she is out, he goes nuts in his cage. He's started barking like crazy. We bought an ultrasonic bark deterant device, but that seems to make it worse. We are using the spray bottle technique, which seems to work after 10 shots or so.
We are also having a major issue with her. She came crate trained -- she would ONLY go in her crate. I kept her out for 4.5 hours one day (she should have to go within a couple of hours or so). She never tried. I put her on a puppy pad numerous times, but nothing. I put her in her cage and literally within 30 seconds, she peed and pooped. She never would go on the floor, or anywhere else for that matter. Put her in her crate (which was sized down for her size) and she would go to the bathroom. We've used an enzyme based urine odor remover, but no affect. I posted about this and mrgmfoster posted a suggestion about this. We've been using it and she seems to be becoming a "normal" puppy in that she will go elsewhere now. We are litter box training, and our older puppy had this down for the most part. He's decided to start peeing in his crate over the past few days, and I think it's attention based.
The root cause is the jealousy, I believe. She barked like crazy when we got her, and he would just whine. Now, the roles are pratically reversed. She whines mostly, with occasional barking episodes (to be expected with a 3 month old puppy). He now barks a lot, when he used to be such a nice quiet dog. I miss my quiet dog.
How can we get them to get along, be a nice quiet family?
Thanks,
Keith
