3yr old dog still occasionally eleminates in house

Zoe, our female shih tzu still goes to the bathroom in the house at times, and I don't know why.  Most of the time she will tell us that she has to go.  Other times she will go a pee and /or poop in front of the toliet!  Or in other rooms too.
Sometimes the kids don't give her enough time outside but that is not always the case.  Yesterday I took her out in the morning, and she refused to poop, I gave her lots of time, told her to poop (she knows what this means) and she just would stand there.  As I was getting ready for work, she went upstairs and pooped in the bedroom.  My husband is getting very grossed out with this and says if this doesn't change then we have to sell her.
Needless to say, I don't want to do this, but I don't know how to get her to tell us EVERY time she needs to go!  She is a very smart dog, and knows she isn't supposed to go inside.

Is this a new thing or has it always been this way?

You really should housetrain her again because "accidents" mean she isn't housetrained. Don't give her the opportunity to go in the house; keep her with you and crate her when you can't watch her.

I can't help but think these aren't accidents. 90% of the time she tells us.  She can go for weeks with out going in the house.  She doesn't have run of the house when we are away.  For the most part, when we  are home she is with us.  I think there is something going on , like  she may be upset with us or something.  I don't know.  In my opinion, if she wasn't trained she would be telling us at all that she has to go. Do you mind me asking, how did you toilet train her, when she was young?

It can definitely be a medical problem, but that is far more likely to be the case if this is new behaviour.    Take her to the vet to get her checked out.   However, dogs can definitely be 99% housetrained and still go inside occasionally that other 1% of the time.

    Lance111,
She was kennel trained, and stayed in her kennel when we were gone or couldn't be with her till she was at least 1 1/2yrs.  We took her out frequently and taught her what the words we were using meant.  We just have to ask her if she needs to go potty and she barks her yes, or just stares at us if she doesn't need too.  If she needs to go she will come to me, (I have to delegate) and barks and when we ask her if she needs to go potty she barks very enthusiasticly.
She was never trained to go inside, even at the breeders.

My pups tell me sometimes when they want to go out.  But if they are too busy they sometimes forget.  But I do not consider them fully housetrained.  My big dog tells me EVERY time he needs to go out.  And if I ignore him because I am in the middle of something, he waits.  He WILL NOT go in the house.  Your girl is not housetrained fully.  Go back to step one and start over.  It will go quicker this time.  But make a big deal over it when she goes where she is supposed to.  Give her treats and praise the heck out of her.  Go crazy if she tells you she needs to go out.  If she makes a mistake ignore it, put her in her crate or somewhere away where she can't see you clean it up.  Note: crating her because she peed is only so you can clean it up and not to punish her.  She shouldn't see you clean it up because it will tell her that its your job.

And tell your husband that he should help you and that I said he is absolutely not allowed to sell your girl because she has had a setback.  Just because I said so.[:D]

    Ok that sounds fine!
I was wondering, can she be quite dominant in any way?
as peeing and pooing problems can have an effect with a dog being  a bit dominant....

Thanks, Huskymom, I will listen to your advice![:)]

Lance111, no, she is not a dominant dog.  She is very docile, loves to be on me as much as possible, and actually rolls over in submission.

Bingo.  The dog is not housetrained.

Also, if you have scolded her for "accidents", she is even more likely to not want to poop in front of humans, or to hide her poops.  Start from square one.  Good book -
