Dogs not fence in or tied.

I was walking my dog on a leash when suddenly a dog runs out of a yard towards my dog I turn around quickly and head the other way, not much latter anouther dog from a different yard runs out towards my dog and me. In my neighborhood people don't seem to care if their dog is fenced in or tied instead they let them roam free. I don't know what to do I can't walk my dog in my own neighborhood without anouther dog approching me. I'm really tiered of having to dodge other people dogs. What can I do? All I want is to walk my dog in my own neighborhood, instead I have to dive to a park to be safe.

is there an animal control around your area? I understand what you mean, I also cannot walk my dogs without being harrased by other dogs so I do not walk Lizzie at all since she is small and very shy.

If I were u i'd walk with a nice strong stick.  Waving a stick at an approaching dog is usually your best bet and you never know when you'll  be approached by a not so nice dog

When I let her out I must be outside with her at all times. My other dog was attaced in my own yard by a neighbors dogs while I was away. I have installed a taller fence but I still worrie. I can't not walk her as thats the only time she is outside.

I have called animal control and they make a regular round down my streed but unless the dog is out there is nothing they can do. The dogs usally hide in the back of the unfenced yard and only run out when anouther dog is neer by. The first ofence is only a warning which is not recoded so the same people just get a warning over and over agean.

I have similar problems in my town. There's been days where I have seen 4 or 5 dogs roaming the streets. I have taken my dog to Petco just so that we can walk around the parking lot on the grass islands so that we can have at least one walk that does not involve a confrontation with a dog that thinks he owns half of the town. Other times, I have called the police and generally have had good response. The kicker is, I have to personally file a "domestic animal at large" complaint, as we don't have ACO services in my little town.

How irresponsible!  That's one of my worst case scenarios (loose dogs, as I have little guys)... I don't have any advice just sympathy.

    Goodluck!

We have the same problem in my subdivision, there is one woman who owns 3 dogs  (on is a "designer dog" whom she named Seven due to the price she paid, he is friendly though, the other is a little black mut who is mean! and known to be aggresive and a german shepherd, whom she brags about being very aggresive and that being the reason he was turned down for search and rescue)

So please tell me why she continues to let all 3 roam?? Animal control caught the friendly one (poor little guy) but not the other 2, it's not safe sometimes to walk across the street cause these dogs will come out of nowhere and the little mean one goes right after your ankles!! Which is why I NEVER leave the house without a hockey stick!! I will NOT be bit!!

It's aggravating and I will NOT walk my dogs, I get them tired playing fetch or "chase" in the backyard.

My best bet is to take my dog to a park where there are strict leash laws. I can use a 20ft control line so that I can play frisbe or soccer with her while on the leash. I never take my dog out of my yard without a leash of some sort. I have control over my dog but I worrie about thoes who simply just don't seem to care. I mean these dogs can easly get hit by a car, run away or even get attaced by anouther dog so why do the owners put there dogs at risk like this?

It happens to, at my work it's all to common for a dog to come in that was attacked or hit by a car. When we ask the owner how it happen the owners just say "he was runing loose in the street and some moron ran over him" or "some idoit trained their dog to attack." It's the owners responsibily to keep their dog safe and in a yard or on a leash so this stuff doen't happen. It make me upset that thye put the blame on everyoe else when they should have had their dog properly fenced in.

I live in a neighborhood where mostly everyone is responsible dog owners.  There are the occasionaly strays.  I purchased a product called "Direct Stop," which I think someone here recommended.  I have never used it, but it does give me confidence when I walk, that I will have a defense.  I have already backed up and gone around the block, or across the street, though too.
I, too, go to the parks to walk most of the time, because they do have a strict leash law, (with somebody, hopefully, watching.)
Once, a guy had his rottie out front while he was doing yard work.  I called out to him, before we got too close, (several houses away), that I was approaching with my dog.  He said that he would "probably" be OK, but would put him in, just in case.  When he went to grab the dog by the collar, it looked like the dog mouthed at him, and the guy jumped back!  A lady in the house called the dog in, and the dog went.  I haven't seen that dog out front loose since.

in the past year i have had problems like this while running my husky.dogs will run out to us barking as we run by.one viscious, the other 2 curious.

i called the animal control officer after the viscious dog owner laughed about it as i was running by.he denied even having a dog to the officer, soooo,i had my wife bring a digital camera and video the next incident...i havnt seen the dog since.

i also told the officer i DID NOT want the dog taken away, did not want a fine, and only wanted the dog tied up or on a leash,as the law requires...too much to ask?i dont thnk so..

another curious dog almost got hit by a truck comming out to see us going by.i have talked to the owner,a nice person who trains horses, but they are old farmers who dont believe in tieing up a dog...i mentioned fencing,so will see..

good luck..you ought to be able to walk your dog anywhere as long as its leashed and you carry clean up bags with you..

I am dealing with a simular situation here also. I had to call Animal Control on my neighbors dog.  This dog is constantly loose.  In peoples garbage.  Well, the other day was the last straw. I was out with Jake and my four-year-old and we were about to walk to another neighbors yard so he and their dog could run and play. When here comes this dang dog.  He was barking and growling, showing teeth and all.  I had to yell at my child to get my hand and get her and  Jake back in the house.    That was 11 days ago the dog is still loose.  According to Animal Control the owner is contacted by mail first and given time to comply.  After 10 days if the dog is still loose you can call back.  Which is where I am now.  I called today and was told an ACO would visit the house and they would stop here to give me some kind of paper.

Its not that hard to restrain your dog.  We do not have a fence so Jake is on a lead. Its 25 ft. long which gives him plenty of range in the  side yard.  It does no allow him near the road and was not expensive.  I mean my Golly  if they would use it I would buy them one.  I just don't get it.
