female dog humping

I read that sometimes females perform male behavior (i.e. humping or raising a leg while urinating) because of their dominant behavior. This behavior will probably lessen after she's spayed. It's annoying and embarassing, but humping is pretty normal.

Spaying won't help, but training will.

I don't buy into all of this dominance stuff, that seems to be popular lately. IMO, humping is just something that dogs do. Mine do it. I don't care, personally, as long as they aren't humping people. For humping people, a quit "eheh" or "off" stops the behavior immediately.

I have a 2 year old female Shih Tzu she has been humping my sisters cats. I have been pretty worried about it.

alot of females will do this when they are nearing their heat cycle and during the heat cycle. My moms Golden will hump other dogs when she is in heat but no other time.
 
k8eeus: Dont worry about the shih tzu humping the cat they cant get pregnant! lol no really, as long as the cats arent terribly upset or trying to claw his eyes out tell the shih tzu 'no' or 'leave it'

My mothers shih tzu humps things.  The trainer indicated that it is her attempt at establishing dominance over what she is humping.  My mom's dog is neutered.  I don't think there is any harm in it!
 

Well we got Daisy fixed. She is still humping!!  Even with the sore tummy and stitches and all in there. We tell her no and she still does it. We push her off and she still does it.  She is only doing it to Clint (boyfriend). 

Lana is almost 2 and she's a spayed shih tzu/bichon x.  She mounts our other male nutered 2 yr old dog.  I believe it's a dominance thing and if you don't like it, just train her not to.

 i have a female husky(spayed)who is a very dominant female over the 2  males we also have...tho the males are bigger,she also humps them when putting them in thier place,while grabbing the  back of thier necks.i find it to be a very dominance oriented behavior.

My boyfriend's mom has a pomeranian and she humps her toy if they have company and no one is paying attention to her so normally we just all ignore her and she stops after a while.

actually its not just a dmoniance behavior but also an attration behavior, spaying may not help, it may lessen the amount she does it, but it wont completely get rid of it. its hard for people to understand but to them its normal for a female to play the role of a male especially going towards their time of being in heat. one of my older dogs dakota does this every once in a while, when i play with my younger pup. when baby is hyped up dakota tends to jump on her and start humping her, she does it because of dominance because out of the dogs she is the highest ranking. she seems to do it only when IM playing with her, any other time she doesnt even pay the pup any kind of attention.it just takes time and a lot of voice corrections  lol  it will get better if you are persistant when she does it also after telling her no try to focus her attention on something else like a toy or such, also you say that she does it while your lying in bed, good idea would be a long walk before bed or hop on a treadmill and wear the dog down a bit, and if she just lays down instead of humping be sure to praise her.

i cant tell you the reason why shes doing because i cant see it but i cant think of A LOT of reasons she may be doing it
