Taking all my stuff!

    Taking all my stuff!

I'm actually a little bit upset right now, because, last night, my friends were over.  And in addition to Dweezil being wary of strangers (working on it), she was taking their shoes, and people were telling me I'm training her wrong.  One of them even tried to discipline her for me.  Which piiiiissed me off.  Way to set back who master is, and be completely inconsistent with my methods...

How do I stop her from taking things?  Running away with them?  My aunt's dog magically stopped after a year ... so is it related to teething?  I'm assuming so, because my aunt made no attempts to really stop him from doing so ...

My Roxy will take shoes.  She doesn't chew on them, so its really not a big problem- except when you are running late for work and can't find one of your shoes!  Sorry I'm not much help- just wanted you to know you're not alone- I feel your pain!

My friends dos used to do that, she told me to take it as a compliment....ha! She stopped her pup from stealing by grabbing a toy of the dog, walking over to the dog adn as she would brab the stolen item she would repriand her, take it, hand her they toy and praise her. So its like stolen item =NO, toy = good
The fact that she is teethingmight enhance the need to get her mouth around more items but many people will tell you to puppy proof your home. Obviously that dosnt work when she is stealing guests things but keep a eye on her and try to catch her in the act before she runs off with it and exchange it for a toy.

Oh and I have a gf that thinks it is ok for her to reprimand my dog, it makes me soooo mad to. Its one thing if your dog is jumping all over them and they are saying get down but in any other case I agree, it is wrong. Then they get pissy if you tell tehm not to. Just say your trainer is trying to help you gain trust with your dog and at this critical stage maybe they can let you handle it! ha ha I can just see your lil thief now.....ooh new toys for me?

    Haha thanks everyone!

Yeah, the friend thing bugged me a lot ... especially when one of them was playing "rough" with her (ended up yelling at him) -- hitting her with his flip flops and i thought it looked innocent enough coz she was wagging and having fun chasing the flip flops ... but then he hit her too hard once and she growled, and then he proceeded to reprimand her and grab her.

Yeah so, let's see if I invite people over again anytime soon ...

When Dweezil steals something, do you chase after, making it like a game (oooh - if I take the shoe, they run after me - I LOVE chase)?  Try calling the dog back to you and trading for a yummy treat maybe?  Then you don't chase and involuntarily get dragged into the "game"...

Big butthead, he was teaching her its ok to jump and rough house on guests and use a sandal as a toy.Sure the boys do play harder with Rory then I do, we have BBQ's and I giver her freedom withthe guests but thats because she has already been taught her manners. Next time tell them to engage her in a game of tug of war or something fun!

That's what i've been doing -- calmly offerring her a treat and telling her to drop whatever she's found.  My friends made it a game, definitely -- it was ridiculously chaotic.  When it's just me alone with her and she's got something, I can tell her to drop it (without a treat!) and she'll obey me ... but when she's excited, totally different story.

Yup, thats the puppy in her! I remember the first time I let Rory off leash at a dog park after we had completed her training and I was happy with her recall, I thought she was such a angel. Wow was I wrong, ha ha! We had never practiced with so many distractions, she didnt listen to one word I said, I almost cried, ha ha!
Invite a couple of close friends over, tell them what you have planned (just a couple) and after her initial excitment try to get her to perform some simple commands with the use of her treats or however you usually reward her. make sure they know not to chime in and try it with distractions!

Absolutely none of my friends are tolerated to "roughhouse" with the dog.  From day one I've taught that it's NOT OK to use your mouth on humans.  I've caught one friend doing the "slap-box" thing with him.  Needless to say that was ended quickly and once I explained to my friend the reason, he never did it again.

I've said before that training your own dog is easy, but training your friends is difficult.

The dog I used to have (much more so than Max) was a shoe & sock thief. When DGS had friends over to swim I always told them to either put their shoes & socks in the spare bedroom and CLOSE THE DOOR  AND KEEP IT CLOSED or else put the socks in the shoes and set them up on the 2X4 that runs across the fence near the top. I just figure if I give them a safe place to put them, my job is done and the rest is up to them. Couldn't your friends find a place to put their shoes that's out of the dog's reach?
