Head on my foot

    Head on my foot

My pup likes to sleep by my feet while I sit on the couch.  When he does this he usually rests his chin on my foot.  While I really like this, I was wondering if this behavior is affectionate or some sort of sneaky dominance.  I know that if a dog leans on you or puts a paw on you this is a way of establishing dominance.  Is this the same thing or just a comfortably way for him to take a snooze?

I would say your pup is comfy with you and likes to show affection. And I wouldn't say that every time a dog leans on you or puts his or her paw on you it is a way of showing dominance. Many dogs do it as a way to show their affection or get your attention. My dog leans against me all the time, with love. If I am sitting down he comes and sits down next to me, leans his whole body against mine and waits for me to put my arm across his back, it's just showing love!

We show them affection by touching them, they return the favor!

My dog sleeps on my bed, and even though my feet are under the covers Max still winds up using my feet and/or ankles for his *pillow*.  When it just gets to be too much and I have to change positions I bribe him (with a small treat) up toward the pillow and as soon as he moves, I move. [:D]

I've also thought of the sleeping on our feet as sort of a security issue for them.  They probably realize that if you get up and leave, they'll be aware of it and that makes them feel more secure.

Touch is very important to dogs.  While some dogs, like mine, don't like to cuddle or snuggle, they still have the need to be touched and or to touch their people.  My guy won't sleep unless he's touching me...a foot, my leg or just putting his head on my feet.  In fact when we're traveling in the truck and pull over to a rest stop he won't sleep b/c he's seperated from me by a seat.

I think that your pup is being reassured by touching you, and you should feel good about it!
