    My dog the cry baby!

Hello! I am new to all this forum stuff so excuse me if i seem like a twit, lol... Um i have a doberman pincher, he will be 2 in september and still has his jewels. He does try to be the boss quite alot of the time so keeping the heirachy can be tiresome. The main problem we have with him is whining...... All the time, over anything untill he gets his own way.. Its beggining to be such a problem we dont know what to do? has anyone any suggestions please? He is not hard done by as he has a lovely garden to destroy and is well fed, played with and exercised. We dont "baby" him at all, but the whining just has to stop! help? x x x[:(][X(]

    Hi and welcome!

I'm not a behavior expert, first off. I just wanted to say you mention that he whines until he gets his way. It sounds like there's your solution. Don't let him get his way when he does whine and the unwanted behavior will extinguish.

First thanks for the repply. Yeah we have tryed but sometimes he will keep whining for up to 3-4hrs at a time for nothing apparent. He'll come up close and will have this 'cross/angry/annoyed' expression on his face and snort at me then start whining? It has driven me upstairs on a few occasions!! Its like he thinks he's human and he wants something and is having a go at me! lol Also as soon as he knows i'm awake in the morning he'll start doing it. Its madness in our house...[:'(]

Is he getting enough exercise, does he have "work" to do?  Occupying the mind is as important as occupying the body, he may be bored.

Hi thanks for the repply. Yeah he gets to run about in the garden most of the time and a descent walk every day, and anywhere else i might go he comes for the walk too? He gets play as often as we've got half hour here and there and he's not starved of affection.. I'm thinking of building some ramps and make-shift agility equiptment for him. His has kinda tuned his whining i'm sure of it and is able to whistle/whine at amazing volumes! I soppose all I can do is try to ignore it.. Or go insane! someone suggested recording it and playing it back to him? Thanks x x

Definately get that boy some mental stimulation! The agility equipment sounds like a really good idea :)

Prince whines on occassion but usually only when he is bored or not being petted when he wants. Its best to ignore that type of behavior or the dog will think he is in charge as he is calling the shots.

Do you have a Kong or treatball you can feed his meals in? How about obedience training? I know Prince absolutely loves obedience and a few short sessions a day along with off-lead runs really help calm him down. On days that he doesn't get mental stimulation, he is still pretty active, even if I take him out for a couple of hours on a walk.

Dobes are a smart breed and need a job to do...exercise only isn't enough sometimes.

Also, I want to mention, with him turning 2 - he may be comming to a point where he is trying to challenge his place in the "pack". Whining may be his way of challenging you (as opposed to growling, ignoring commands, etc) Are you familiar with Nothing in Life is Free (NILIF) training?
    • Bronze
Yes defintely! I did buy him a treat ball but belive it or not he destroyed it in a day and a half, lol! I soppose I asume he's had enough when we get back as he'll have a drink and go and lounge in his chair for a while. Then he'll get up and cry about something an hour later? It does get tediouse, especially when u've got a migrain. Seems like he'll have fun then a rest then tell me he wants more. I think if he had his own way he'd be running around all day with the occasional snooze [&o]

Have you had him vet checked to make sure there is nothing
    physically wrong with him?

I'm fairly familiar with the heirachy that occures in a household with a dog. I think He knows it goes Me then Him, I think he power struggles with my partener, as he's not that interested in dog's and the responsibilities that go with them unfortunately. Maybe its not the dog after all. He'll give him a the odd chip or something then tell him off for begging next time he eats? .....
    • Bronze
Yeah, Its not a painful whine and the vet cant find anything wrong with him? Its more like attitude? I think he's just cheeky.. Or maybe he does need some work. Everything is so exiting and interesting to him when we go out so i cant see why he's maybe bored? Maybe he's just grredy lol x x

Anyone got more info on (NILIF) training? might be helpful.
Mant thanks for the responses. x x

Have you thought about Schutzhund at all? I saw you were from the UK, and have read that the Dobes from Europe have quite a strong working drive...so he quite possibly may be bored. Are there any competetive obedience trails or anything in your area? Or obedience classes in general? Agility is good too like you were mentioning. Lots of exercise and working combined. [;)]

It sounds like you have a great dog. I hope you can find out why he is whining so much.

NILIF - basically the dog does not get what it wants unless it works for that reward (i.e., sitting and waiting before getting his dinner, sitting before being petted or going outside, etc)

He may be very frustrated because of female dogs in the area. I would have this dog neutered that may help quite a bit.
