HELP! Dog hasn't peed for 24 hrs!

Hey all.. I'm pretty new to this forum, however I did spend some time looking around for an answer before actually posting my situation.

First, let me give you the "short" history of my dog. Maybe it'll help distinguish what's wrong.

My dog Lilo is a year and a half old Shithtzu. She's very hyper, but very sweet and commands a lot of attention. When I got Lilo (about 8 months ago), she was only semi-potty trained. Her previous owner worked all day, so the poor thing stayed in the cage all day and even most of the evenings, and only taken out to eat, go potty, and once in a while play with the previous owners 10 yr old son. The dog was actually a gift for him (hence the Disney character name), but like most kids he soon got bored with this "toy," he stopped playing with Lilo, which resulted in her being caged up probably 20 of the 24 hours in a day. Very sad, I know. And it's the reason she acts like she's so attention starved now. Will she ever grow out of this?

Anyway, I adopted Lilo and right away (with the help of my parents) started training her on how to go outside on her own (in my tiny fenced in townhouse backyard). My parents also have an old Pekinese who is 100% very well trained and will let out a little bark at the back door when she needs to go. She goes out, does her business, and comes right back in. I was hoping Lilo would watching and learn from her, but no such luck.

For the most part, she is now 99% potty trained when it comes to peeing. She has only recently had an accident in the house here or there when no one has been able to let her out. Pooping, however, is another story. Regardless of how many times we take her out in a day, she will poop in the house 50% of the time. She always does it someplace where you can't see her. If I'm in the family room, she'll do it around the corner, at the bottom of the stairs. If I'm in my bedroom, she'll do it right outside, at the top of the stairs. If we're near the stairs, she'll go around to the hall. You get the picture...

Well, now I have moved to another state and have brought Lilo with me. It's just the two of us. The last couple of months, she turned into a little jealous nipping machine when it came to my parents' Pekinese and Persian. She had  to be the center of attention at all times and if she wasn't, she would actually start nipping at the other two if they were getting attention from someone. My new home is a house with a concrete backyard with inground pool, all screened in. If you're from Florida, you know what I'm talking about. There is a door leading to the back, where there is a small grassy area, but I have to leash her to take her out there. It's a pain. A real pain. So my 3rd day here, I had this brilliant idea to make one of those grassy puppy potties. I went to Lowe's and purchased a large square tray (the kind that you slide under washing machines to catch drips) and a few pieces of sod. When I got home, I carefull cut up and arranged the sod in the tray, so that it was like a large square of grass. I pulled it to the back and inside the screened in deck and placed it in a perfect corner. I brought her out and she went on it almost right away! I was elated! The grass is about half the size of the grassy area she had to go on back at the townhouse, so she's probably reminded of that, right? The next day, it was a bit harder. She started walking around doing the whole sniff and explore thing. I was tired, so I picked her up, placed her on the grass and told her "Go Potty." She walked off. I did it again. She went. Yayy! At this point, I'm getting excited. Well, that was about 3pm yesterday afteroon. Last night, I took her out one last time before bed and she wouldn't go. Everytime I tried to place her on the grassy area, she would walk off. I did it 3x. The third time, she just sat there. So, I came in, took a quick 10 min shower, got out.. and what do I find on my bathroom floor but a huge puddle of pee. Obviously, I was very disappointed.

This morning she woke me up at 5:30 am, so I took her out, but she didn't want to pee, she wanted to play. I couldn't fall back asleep, for fear she would pee all over the carpet, so I stay awake. Every two hours today I have taken her out and she has done NOTHING. I've tried moving the grassy area, I got desperate and took her for a walk about an hour ago, but still nothing. She has not peed since about 8pm last night (26 hours ago)! She's been drinking, as I've filled her bowl up in the morning and again a little bit ago. And she's not constipated, as she left me a little smelly pile earlier today.

I don't know what to do! I'm tired, but I'm afraid if I fall asleep she'll pee all over the house and my landlord will kill me! I'm also afraid she's sick. If anyone hasn't fallen asleep from this terribly long story by now and has any advice they can offer, I would certainly appreciate it! ANYTHING from how to make her START peeing to how to make her STOP pooping in the house, would be appreciated! I just feel like I constantly have to watch her, like she's a two year old or something and I don't know how much more I can take, between the constant watching and the worrying about ruining these carpets. But she's the sweetest dog I've ever met and I don't think I could bare to live without her! [:(]

Has she been drinking?  I'd suspect a UTI or that she's sneaking to pee somewhere you don't see her.

But if you honestly think she hasn't urinated in 24 hours her bladder likely needs to be expressed by a vet.

Leash her to you while you are home.  That helps keep track of her.  When she has a poop accident, go put her in her crate and then pick up the mess and take it OUTSIDE and leave it on the paper towel (don't clean up while she can watch you -- that reinforces it somehow to them)

Then take her out ON leash and show her where YOU put it.  Give her a trigger like a bell on the door or something to tell you she has to go.  (bat it with her paw every time on the way out).  But you have to do something to tell her you want her to elminate out there -- because if you are just scheduling her (and taking her out at intervals when she doesn't NEED to go, then she may not get it).

Stupid question -- but since this is a tzu -- are you sure she's not leaning forward and peeing without you seeing her??

LOL, I am sorry but I had to giggle at this one, as my two boys will sometimes lean way down and forward and pee and if you dont watch carefully you just dont know they have done it!
On a serious note, if your pooch is drinking but not peeing, it could be UTI which could lead to bigger problems. Our beloved Mopsie who went to bridge 2 years ago had several kidney/bladder stones and couldnt pee, and it came on suddenly.

She finally went! Twice today actually. I took her out first thing in the morning. She piddled around.. wouldn't stay on the patch of grass, so we came in. She then started barking at me and walking toward the front of the house, all the while turning around to see if I was following her. I did and she went to the garage door and barked. I opened it and she went in. I heard my alarm going off in my bedroom, so I closed the door leading in the house (so she couldn't come in and pee on the carpet w/o me watching) and went to turn off the alarm. I came back, not even 30 secs later and she was waiting for me at the door. Sure enough she peed right behind my truck.

A few hours later, she barked to go outside. I took her out, lit a cigarette and sat down. I watched her piddle around again and then I saw her start sniffing and walking in circles on the other side of the patio. She peed again. Right on the patio, not the square of grass, but I was happy enough that it wasn't inside, so I didn't care. It's been raining today anything so it'll wash away fast.

I'm still having a hard time trying to figure out why she won't go on the square of grass i made for her though. She never went on concrete back at the old house so I'm surprised she did today. And the old house was only maybe twice the size of the patch of grass I made for her her.

I do keep a very good eye on her. I work from home, so in a sense it's easy, but it's also hard, b/c if I see her walk off, I have to stop what I'm doing to follow her. I don't really use a schedule with her, she usually just barks at the back door when she wants to go out, but yesterday since she hadn't gone all day, I was taking her out every two hours so I wouldn't find any surprises anywhere later. Hopefully, she's just getting used to the new house and outdoor area. But I think I'm still going to have a bad time with the pooping. I'll try your suggestion though, with putting her in her crate after she has an accident. The thing that kills me, is after she poops in the house, she KNOWS she's done wrong b/c she'll lay down with her head low to the ground and watch me pick it up and throw it out, even if I don't say a word to her. And afterwards, when I sit down, she'll come jump on my and start licking my face, for redemption.

She is one clever but very stubborn dog.

Callie didn't mean to put her in the crate to punish her for pooping in the house.  She meant simple to confine her so she isn't WATCHING you clean it up.

    I knew that.

Although to her, it is like a punishment, even just for a few minutes, b/c she was confined in the crate for so long before I adopted her. She runs and hides if she even sees the crate.

In that case you shouldn't use the crate...put her in another room or outside while you clean up.

Thank you for the help. I think there's a lot of very useful information as well as knowledgable people in this forum, which will make me stick around.

Don't know if this is the case or not, but if the ground gets too soiled from pee, she may not want to pee there again.  Our dogs are kind of annoying in this regard.  They get pretty stubborn sometimes about peeing in spots that are saturated with pee already.  And since the patch of grass is small and can't leach into the ground, then that might be the case.

I second the leashing her to you while inside.  Maybe get an X-pen kind of thing to put in the kitchen/bathroom?

I think that's the case also. She's just really finicky when it comes to where she goes to the bathroom, I think.

There is actually an hallway that I'd like to gate off when I'm not home. It would leave her the entire kitchen and entry area, which is plenty of room for her to get around on and be active with her toys without getting onto the carpet. It's all ceramic tile, so should she have an accident, it won't be as bad to clean up. The only problem is that the opening that I need to gate up is 64" wide and the widest I've found in stores (Petco, Petsmart, Walmart, Kmart, Target and Lowes) is 50". Does anyone know where I can find something that is wider? I need one that is non-mounting, as I can't punch any holes in the walls. Price is not a problem, as long as it's also of  good quality.

That's why tethering her to you by leash would be a really good idea. Right now (even though you're watching her closely) she still has the opportunity to quickly sneak off and go to the bathroom in the house.

And btw, congrats on getting a Shih Tzu! They're my absolute favorite breed!! She definitely had a rough start in life, but at least now she has a good home with you. :)

Maybe you can combine two gates, join them with screws or something?

I have to agree with everyone as far as tethering her to you while you are in the house.  My Lucy was hard to train when she was little.  She would sneak off and poop when I wasn't looking.  I finally tried the tethering and it worked.  She is 1 1/2 now and I "still" have the downstairs stairs blocked off with a baby gate.  It used to be the place she would slink off to when she had to go.  That is how she finally starting letting me know she had to go.  She would stick her head through the newel posts and look down.  I would take her out and she would go.

Is there an area with a smaller opening that you could use with the linoleum?  She doesn't need a "large" amount of room.  Maybe just the kitchen area?
