Rescue dog still peeing in the house

someone could always think of a crueler option to almost anything, but i think this can be handled without being cruel at all.  one option could be getting up in the middle of the night to take the dog outside until she starts doing it on her own.  its been stated she knows how to use the doggy door, she just doesnt use it at night yet for some reason.  im sure there are other options as well.  i dont think theres just one way of doing things here.

Jaye, is there a particular reason that every time I post you come back and tell me I'm wrong?  This is going on in two different threads tonite............
    • Gold Top Dog
nope, we just happen to disagree at times.  you ve posted that im wrong as well.   no biggie.

To say that COOKED bones are more likely to splinter and thus are dangerous is FACT.

To say that a crate is cruel is OPINION.

As many years as I've had dogs, I just *might* know a thing or two.

yep, it is my opinion, i never tried to pass it off as fact.

just as it is  OPINION to say that crating is the ONLY way to fix this particular problem.

bones have nothing to do with it.

yep, you sure do know a lot, there is always more to learn.

CALL your vet and ask.  S/he will tell you what I said is accurate.

I do apologize for not noticing your name at the bottom and addressing you as such.

Yes, please call your vet on this one. It may very well be a host of other things, but I'm under the impression he/she will recommend a URI regardless.

Why are you getting hostile with me, Glenda? I don't mean to step on toes, just offering some advice.

Glenmar, your climbing a slippery-slope here.

A lot of things can be going on with this dog, personality-wise. You can't give veterinary advice without a license.

I'm not being hostile.  When I'm hostile, everyone knows it.  And if I'd been hostile I promise I would have gotten an email from Jaime telling me to knock it off.

I offered a suggestion that MANY people here use to help their dogs make it through the nite without wetting on the floor.  I was not giving VETERINARY advice.  Had I said something like "she probably has a weak pelvic floor and CAN'T hold it", and gee you should give her X medication"....THAT would be veterinary advice.

Given that the ONLY time this gal can't HOLD it is at nite I wouldn't suspect a UTI...you get some very specific behaviors with that.  But had I thought it a possibility, my suggestion would be to either get the dog or a urine specimen TO the vet for analysis.  And THAT wouldn't be offering veterinary advice either.  That would be offering "been there, done that" advice.  Big difference.

[sm=2cents.gif] For what it is worth, none of us here claim to be veterinarians. We offer suggestions because a lot of us have as Glenda said "Been there done that"

I also think it is a behavioral problem with this dog. Especially since she does this at night only. The owner can always take her pet to a vet to seek s/he advise on this too.

I have a 4 month old puppy and she is mostly housetrained (She had 2 accidents this weekend, but I found out she has a UTI, so I'm not too worried). BUT she still gets a water cutoff and crated at bedtime. There are plenty of housetraining websites that advocate it while in training, and my vet said she's fine thru the nite w/o water.

About the hitting/rubbing nose in it. Even if you see her do it, if you rub her nose in it this is teaching her that GOING POTTY in front of YOU is bad, not that going in YOUR HOUSE is bad. She will only be more afraid of you. ESP because she was a rescue dog she needs extra love and extra praise...she's already afraid enough as it is. When Peyton would make a mistake in the house, I made a loud "AAAAGGHHH" or "NO" and that would scare her to stop and then I"d pick her up rush her outside and she'd finish on the grass and then she'd get a treat and a good back rub.

Crating her at nite will be loud at first, and then she'll progressively stop. At first Peyton woke up every 4 hours on the dot to pee and then she woke at 6 hours, and now, she'll go 8 if I need the extra sleep. Sometimes she still whines if she's in the crate and I'm in bed but she knows I'm awake. I ignore her and she makes a "huff" and goes to sleep. She will get used to the crate. At about 10:30, if I haven't put her in bed yet, she goes in herself and chews her bone or goes to bed. She (almost) really likes her crate now...sure she likes to be out more, but your pup will get used to her crate.

Just be as diligent as possible about housetraining her. Be proactive...take away her chances at failure. (Like not giving her water too late, keeping her crated.) The less chances she has at failure, the less she'll fail.
