    not really digging after all...

after watching my 5+month old I have found that he is not so much digging as he is EATING the grass and dirt. Just tearing big chunks out to eat. His new favorite is SOD (put down to address some of the holes he started in the first place) Some others have mentioned putting his poop there but he EATS that too so I doubt he would see it as a deterant! (honestly I do feed him!!!) My husband is a fanatic about his lawn so this is not going over well! Any suggestions? Thanks!

Um Supervision?  More exercise?  Give him something to work on when he is out there.

sometimes dogs eat their own poop (coprophagy) simply because there's nothing else to do. try increasing his exercise, both mentally and physically -- take him on longer walks, more outings and do some obedience training.

My girl was a dirt, rock, sand, brick, and grass eater! She is now a little over a year and has given up all but the grass. The vet said a lot of pups eat dirt too and they'll just grow out of it. The sod my girl still goes crazy for but we just leave it covered until we are ready to lay it out.. Did you try burying the poop? Maybe give him massive distractions like cow hooves, pig's ears (you have to monitor those), knuckle bones and stuff like that. make those his "outside" treats so he dosnt tire of them inside and so when he does go out he'll be hunting those down instead. My back yard is littered with cow hooves but at least the grass is nice now!
