Submissive Peeing

    Submissive Peeing

My 1 1/2 year old JRT/Chi mix has had this problem for awhile and I've be trying to fix it but with no success.  Whenever we walk over to pick him up he pees.  I was wonder what i can do to make this stop.  When ever DH goes to pick him up to take him to the back yard Pepe crouches down and pees.  It is driving me nuts because sometimes he does it on his bed or blankets.  I don't yell at him and just take him outside, but it keeps happening.  What can I do?

    Hi Puggy,

Try talking in a high happy voice when addressing him and reaching for his chest instead of over head. He is feeling intimidated when you go over his head. Or call him to you, then reach for his chest to pick him up.
Have DH do the same thing. Do you know the history of this little guy?

We got him when he was 4 1/2 months old from a flea market, yes I know bad idea.  He was healthy and all, but alway scared of other people.  I later found out that the lady we had got him from was running a puppy mill.  So I guess that couldn't have been to nice for him.  I just feel so bad for him because i don't want him to be afraid all the time.

    Awwwwwww poor baby.

I know one of our trainers/behaviorists will see this post and give you some ideas on how to build his confidence up. I am sure that will help him not to be so affraid of everything.
Bless you and your family for taking him in.

My pom pees when my husband comes home and greets him.   ;Puppy will be wagging his tail and happy, and just peeing!  I read somewhere that they may pee to try to make you see that they are trying to please you.  I noticed I was usually the one who would praise him for going potty in his litter box.  So, maybe he doesn't feel the need to please me as much, lol!  You can tell he's really proud of himself after using the litter box, its really cute!  Hubby has been making an effort to always say a big "good boy!" after the pup uses the litter box, and just ignores when the pup pees when he comes home.

We just recently started using the pee pads for when we are out for long periods of time.  Pepe and my pug are doing very well on them.  When we got home today there was pee on it and I praised both dogs while they were next to it.  I know it was after the fact and hard to tell who it was, but Pepe seemed to happy about it.  I'm going to get DH to start praising him for going outside or on the pad.

The peeing doesn't really bother me all that much because I know he doesn't mean to do it.  I really just want to make him more confident, and not be scared all the time.  I don't know if he was abused or something but even when you go to pet him he cowers down like you are going to hit him.  This has been going on since I got him, but until I found idog I had no help on what to do to help him.  Just wondering if anyone knows how to bring his confidence up?  I just want him to be happy and not scared of people.  I can't even take him to stores like Petsmart because he crys and pees on the floor when a person comes near him.

When you go to pick him up, do you bend down over him? If so, maybe you could get way down on the floor with him...

How do you greet him when you come home?

I had a Border Collie who did this exact thing... >X.x;< Basically, I just didn't greet her when I walked in the door... I walked around and did my own thing, waited until she was calm, and then I sat down at her level and let her come get petted. >^^;<

Yes I bend over him when I go to pick him up, but sometimes I kneel down and pet him first.  Even when I kneel down next to him he crouches down.  When I come home I just walk by both of them and then after a few minutes they go outside with me.  After they all have go outside I let them in and we usually sit on the bed or the chairs in the living room.  The chairs are a little smaller that a love seat and he sits on the arm of the chair.  So it's not like i am towering over him and he still just crouches down and puts his ears back when I go to pet him.  He does not pee when we are sitting on the chair unless you stand up and try to pick him up.  But on the floor he will pee even if you kneel down to pick him up.  I is more with DH and pretty much ever other male he is in contact with, but sometimes I can bring it on too even if I am acting like I always do.  I would just love to see him walk around proud like my pug does, not like someone is always out to get him.

Edited to add:  Also once you do get to the point where you pet him or hold him he starts licking you no stop.  It doesn't bother me, but has his ears way back and his eyes wide when he does this.
