Dog afraid of any loud noises

My tzu, Nemo, has always been a bit afraid of loud noises but it seems the older he gets the worse it is. He is now afraid, A LOT, of thunderstorms, people hammering on roofs (lots of new construction where I live), car doors, fireworks, etc.
We dont baby him when those things happen, but he is still afraid. Is there something I can do to help him overcome his fears?

first off, you are doing the right thing by not babying him when he's acting afraid. i'm not sure about this but someone told me that dogs who are fearful of loud noises can be desensitized by re-creating the noises that scare him (like hammering) so he gets used to them. you can also try to give him his favorite toy to play with to take his mind off his fears the next time you are in a noisy area.

We have purchased a CD of harp music and let me say this works!! I was skeptical but it was storming the other night and I turned it on and both of my dogs were just fine!! Well, of course I also used the Rescue Remedy as well but the harps will be playin in this house during thunder and on the 4th of July that is for sure![:D]

Great idea.  Dogs DO love music -- my old sheltie/corgie LOVED celtic music and particularly bagpipes!!  He would actually recognize certain songs and would get all excited when his favorites were played!!  No joke -- I told a stranger one day when we were at the Highland Games somewhere (we go all over to them) - I told him my dog LOVES "Scotland the Brave" and he thot I was kidding.

Nope -- the massed bands started to play ... Foxy STOOD UP and wagged ALL over.  The guy was absolutely speechless that Foxy actually recognized the tune!!

In that case, that particular tune is one we have on a .wav file that plays every time the computer goes down for the night..  To Foxy it meant somebuddy was playin that big computer and we were ALL gonna have together time now!! LOL

Same principle -- you play music that is soothing and the dog pairs it with "everything is ok, and I enjoy that" ... and it helps deal with a bad stimulus! SMART!!

i once had a PARAKEET that did the same thing!!  to different songs of course.  his favorite was a tune from the indiana jones soundtrack.  he would start hopping from leg to leg and chirping like crazy.

my dog use to be scared of the hair dryer when i dried him. every time i turned it on he'd jump. but eventually he stopped getting scared. i guess they're scared of the unknown. if you can get him to realize sound doesn't hurt then maybe he'll stop. i dont know im no expert. its just a thought

emma isnt afraid of anything, but jake is also afraid of the hair dryer, and motorcycles, really loud big trucks, and the vacuum.

I was watching the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel the other day, this guy rocks.... he was working with a dog that was afraid of everything, and as soon as something freaked him out... he suggested taking him on a walk to "get over it" and move on from what freaked him out. Maybe try the walks, or perhaps giving him something he's interested in. My dog hated thunderstorms, so when we can go out, we just give her her Kong with some peanut butter in it, and that usually lasts her through the storm, and she forgets what was even going on. Good luck :)

I bought a CD from [linkhttp://www.happydogtrainers.com]www.happydogtrainers.com[/link] - really useful. Not just sound recordings but also he tells you about ways to treat your dogs with drugs and other therapies. I liked the idea of nut having our Cindy doped to the eyeballs!. I'm v.happy with the result.
