    Humping Puppy

I have an eight week old Old English Sheepdog male who was socialized with it's littermate until 7 weeks old until it came home with me and my 11 year old spayed Old English Sheepdog mixed female.  He nips a lot and barks at my female and being arthritic she growls at him but doesn't get physical with him to put him in his place.  Yesterday, I intoduced him to a friend's 3 year old neutered Boxer male and they sparred (playingly) and chased each other in a fenced in yard when suddenly the puppy started licking the older dogs genitals and humping the air.  He repeated this several times inbetween play sessions, is this just an unusual and bizarre event that my puppy does and will not grow out of and I should be concerned or what?  Do I need to consult a specialist?  The other dog did not seem to be concerned or find it offensive, this seemed like a prison thing to me.  What should I do?

    First, welcome to idog.

Second, relax and realize that this is perfectly normal "dominance" behavior, not at all sexual.  When I have fosters who behave like this I correct "unh uh" and distract them each and every time they do this and soon they learn that this is not behavior that mom appreciates and it stops.

Thanks for the quick reply, it had me up at 4am, as you can see, worried that my little Zorro was a freak...  After his socialization yesterday with Ali the Boxer, he seems amazingly calmer all this morning and a lot less nippy, maybe he is tired still or maybe he is letting the nip wounds heal on my arms after the experts advice of squealing when he first initiates and ignoring him if he keeps on nipping.  He seems a lot more content to try and lick my older Dessy, but she still growls at him and more tries to ignore him when they are in a small room together.

Thanks again for the welcome to the forum, I will have a lot more questions, believe me, it has been a dozen years since I have raised a pup.
