    screaming...

I'm just curious to know if anyone else has a dog who screams.  I've had Buster since he was 3 months old (he's now 11) from a shelter.  We believe he is part greyhound.  When he is excited he makes a screaming sound which is quite loud.  He has done this for as long as we've had him, but I am wondering if this is common among some breeds.  When he is out people always ask if he is ok or if he is hurt, my reply, "nope he's just happy!"  He does bark, but it is very rare and only if he is playing or if something startles him.  Has anyone ever heard of a dog doing this?  Thanks.

Here is a picture of him:

Not terribly long after Solo and Trinity went to their new home, Lori came home to find an ACO card on her door.  Before she could reach the ACO a neighbor stopped by to see if her "little" dog was  ok.  Now Big, her shar pei is the littlest dog Lori has and she told the guy this, but he insisted, no, the little dog was yelping like it was being hurt.....about that time Solo started yelping and she walked around with the man to SHOW him....the 65 "little" GSD who makes noises like a little yorkie!!

My dog Zoey screams, too (shes a beagle/border collie X).  She carries on so loudly when she sees a squirrel or another dog that I've had to stop walking her until I can get her reactivity under control.  Its kind of a very high pitched loud almost yodel/bark.  Its embarrassing- people come to their front doors or look out their windows at us.  And sometimes I walked her early in the morning and I feel bad that I might have woken people up!

My poodle Goliath is a screamer also. When one of us comes home, he stands in the window and screeches at the top of his lungs. It sounds like he's just been hit by a car or something.
He's done this since we rescued him.

Thanks so much!  I feel better knowing that my Buster isn't the only one who screams.  So I guess it's just a personality thing.  When we first rescued him he was so afraid of people, but a few weeks later he really opened up.  Who knew!

GeorgAnne - our dog, Pofi, screams, too.  Not often, especially since we got a second dog and he's occupied playing with her much of the time.  But when he is really anxious and really wants me to do SOMETHING with him (i.e. go for walkies or just play) he shreiks at me.  Very high pitched, very sharp, punctuated bursts.  Can be postively ear splitting!

My vet and I and several dog park regulars think Pofi is part sight hound, too...

    BTW, Buster's mighty cute!

    Welcome!  Buster sure if handsome!

Izzy is a screamer too!  It is usually when she wants out of her crate or is excited or upset about something...

Right after we rescued Gandolf, he screamed like a banshee whenever we came home (even if we'd been gone only 30 seconds) - and the sound, it was incredible - like he was being tortured.  He does not do it much anymore, because we somehow were able to ignore him until he calmed down and he learned that the sound got him nowhere in terms of attention.  He's still quite vocal, but the screaming has stopped (thank goodness!).

Thanks everyone!  He's actually passing this on to our younger dog Max.  He doesn't do it as loud, but if he isn't getting what he wants he will start to sound like Buster.

One of my dog's playmates, a little pug, would squeal when she's really happy when she's playing. And my dog usually makes really loud grunty noises when he's playing.

    Screaming Irish Banchee!

I have an idea that the horrific screams of the Irish Banchee were really the rallying cries of Cairn Terriers.
At 2 a.m., with the whiff of far off skunk or some other varmint in his nose, my Cairn runs door to door screeching and crying such a ruckus you would think he must either be in pain or about to explode....  I let him out into the pen with a shudder and a prayer that the neighbors have their windows closed.

Greyhounds often scream when they are injured. They let out this heart-rending wail. they don't usually do it when they're happy, though, just when they're in pain.

My little mutt puppy screams when she's in a crate and wants OUT O-U-T NOW. And I have a friend whose dog screams when she wants to go over to another dog, and isn't allowed to.

So it's definitely not just your dog!
