Ticks.....Yuck!

Okay, I have a bit of a questions? I made the post about how my neighbors dog wont go home,well lets just say we now think of him as family! But today I found a couple ticks on him .....yuck....I really dont like those little nasty things.... But I got the twezzers and sat him down and got those nasty little burgers of him. I felt bad for him cause I figure his real owner (my neighbor) is not putting anything on him to keep the ticks and fleas off. So it also makes me wonder if the dog has been getting his shots.......So I was wondering should I just get something on my own for the dog to keep the fleas and ticks off or should ask is real owner the neighbor first? and would it be wrong to take the poor dog to the vet? I want to take him to the vet since I feel his real owner is not, and I would like to make sure he is on some type of heart worm meds to keep him from getting sick, but since he is really owned by the people next door I am worried I make them mad or offend them, what do yall think I sould do?

I'd ask the real owners before you do anything. It is their dog, even if they may not care about it much.

I'd get some frontline plus for both dogs and use it.
I wouldn't worry about people that apparently don't worry about the wellbeing of the dog

Gwen, I have done that very thing before with out the owners permission and paid for the vet bill myself. Eventually the owners just packed up in the middle of the night and left the poor dog to fend for himself in their yard. So, I took him in.
In the meantime I had been giving the dog heartworm stuff, flea and tick medication when it came over to visit. I didn't leave it up to the owners to apply all this stuff nor did I ask them for reimbursement either. I just did it when they were not looking. The dog is so much happier now that he has a family to look after him and still remembers me when I come over to visit or even just passing through. The dog knows my car and goes nuts if I drive thru without saying hi to the fella.
I would just do it with out their knowing it.

I think it's pretty risky to even apply frontline without knowing that the dog is not already getting it. And hw meds, wow, I'd never do that without blood tests first.

Of course that is with taking the dog to the VET first and having all the tests and exam done on the dog first.

I agree with Glenda. I would never apply or give any meds to a dog if you don't know for sure it's not already getting them. [sm=eek.gif]

Perhaps you could buy some Frontline and bring it over as a "gift". Start off the conversation by saying something like "Jane, I just found this stuff and it is wonderful! Thought you might want to try some on Scruffy - it's so easy to do. Just one squirt a month and no worries from fleas, ticks, etc. My vet has it at his clinic - here's his phoe number..."

Who knows, she may just "bite" (ha ha) and at least solve the flea/tick problem since they are no doubt in her house if they are on the dog.

If she doesn't follow up, I would just put the Frontline on the dog since he comes to visit your house all the time. Fleas in a homea rea anightmare. I would not do the heartworm meds without a check by a vet first. Just my [sm=2cents.gif]
