    potty habits... driving me crazy

i have a new little unneutered chihuahua mix.  well when i take him outside to go potty, he ll walk around forever until he decides he found a spot and then he tinkles just a teeny bit and walks on until he feels like tinkling just a teeny bit again, and he ll do this about 6 times or so until i get tired of it and bring him back inside.  there is no way to know when hes finished except for walking around with him all night i guess.  will he get better at pottying after hes neutered?  will he just go and be done with it?  thanks.  i love my emma,  she goes potty as soon as we step foot outside, every time.

Bear is the exact same way!  Even after he was neutered  he had some accidents in the house, guess because I was a little impatient for him to hurry.  He's a little better now.  I notice on a walk he keeps pee in "reserve" still, but most of the time I let him out into  the back for about ten minutes and he's fine for the night.  I'm sorry I couldn't help you, I just ended up taking him out often and then the problem just seemed to fix itself.

I would take him out on a leash and tell him to hurry up potty or what ever term you use. Once he does this take him back inside for 5mn then take him back outside to do his investigating.
It sounds like he is distracted as to why he is outside in the first place and is just marking or leaving a calling card so to speak. Just like we read the newspaper, they read the ground outside as their newspaper.
The trick is to get him to know he is out for a reason then after his business is done he may roam around reading his news of the day. lol

It's amazing, isn't it, just how much pee they can hold in *reserve*? [:D] Every time we go out it's like Max is thinking to himself "OK, how far are we going today?  How much can I pee on each tree and still make sure I have enough left for my own tree when I get back"?

I leash relieve my dog and I used to have a bit of a problem getting her to go at home instead of on walks. She would want to go in harness while we were walking somewhere and wouldn't go when I took off the harness. We seem to have sorted it out now. She usually walks around for a few minutes and then goes. She's gotten into a definite routine so I know when she's likely to want to go.
