    No begging please

When BF and I eat Harley is right there at our feet.  I don't want to give her any people food when we are eating.  I want her to laydown.  She will laydown for about 20 seconds before she gets up again.  I praise her when she lays down, but I don't know if that's enough.  Does anyone think it would be ok to give her a training treat when she lays down while we are eating?  She's very food motivated and listens and comes really well when she knows I have treats.

feeding at the table is feeding at the table, doesnt matter what the content is.  Tie the dog to a chair leg and work on the down.  Just expect that you will only get a bite at a time and may have quite a few cool bites.  Just one of the things you have to deal with when training.  My girl it took about 3 weeks on lead, then off lead.

Do yourself a big favor and NEVER feed your dog ANYTHING at the table. You will never have a peacful meal again. MRV has good advise. I never tied my dog to a chair but I did totally ignore any begging or wanting looks. If he got his nose too close to the edge of the table I would ask him to sit. Other than that I just ignored him. It took only a couple weeks tops! Now my dog lies beside our table every evening no fuss, no muss! When the table is cleared he gets a treat for his patience,

You have no idea how much trouble a malinois puppy can get into in the amount of time it would take me to get out of the chair and find her [;)]  If she didnt get her requests for attention met in a nano second, she was off exploring her new house (I brought her home at 7 months).  The chair leg was sheer survival LOL

I totally agree. I'm not too picky about dog behavior, but begging at the table is unacceptable. You must have a strict no feeding from the table policy, that everyone in your household must follow. My dog now knows that the best place to be is in her bed across the room, because if she's patient, the treat will come.

I actually go one step further, I won't feed in the kitchen either.  They have their own specific eating spots, the kitchen isn't one of them, neither is the table.
