No matter what time of year please re-consider a puppy or dog for a gift, but especially around holiday time. Did you know that the 2 months after Christmas are one of the busiest times for shelter and rescues? So many “Christmas” puppies and dogs are returned because the novelty has worn off, they are too hard to house break, etc.
Many parents want to make Christmas special and get their children a puppy, the idea and thought is wonderful, but we have to be realistic. Take into consideration how hectic holidays can be, having a house full of guests or traveling can be crazy enough without a new dog to deal with. If you really want to add a dog or puppy to your family think about this fun idea. Give them a stuffed dog and explain that when the spring comes we will get our dog! Then spend the winter months preparing, thinking about what breed is right for your family, do we get a dog or a puppy? Talk to trainers, breeders and rescues in your area they can help you so much. Puppies are great but you may want to consider a younger dog or older dog too depending on what will fit your lifestyle the best.
If you are thinking about giving a dog as gift to an adult, though you may think it’s a wonderful surprise they may not. Best to talk it over with them first and go from there.
There are many rescues out there that can be very helpful with matching up the right dog for you and many have puppies too. If you do want to look to a breeder be sure to check on them and make sure they are reputable and that the dogs are raised in the home and vet checked properly during the first weeks of their lives. A puppy should be 8 to 10 weeks old before they are allowed to leave their mother. Our community is a great place to reach out and ask for help before you do anything. We are always here for you.
We have to remember a dog is for life so we need to think about what is best for them first. Do your homework and prepare so that it’s a fun and happy time for everyone.
