Territorial dog drama with large age gap.

Territorial dog drama with large age gap.

Stamp the mutt will be 13 yrs next month, he's in pretty good shape for his age except the cataracts, heart murmur, arthritis, cysts/tumors (we will not do surgery at his age) and hearing loss. He's pretty happy and pain seems to be minimal. I've had him since about 6 weeks when he was abandoned, he's a mellow, lazy happy dog as long as your not late at feeding time, then he'll stare a hole in your head until you feed him.

Gracie is a border collie, she will be 2 in February. She is obsessive in everything she does and doesn't stop moving except to sleep.

We have a very small house and 5 fenced acres, outside they get along fine with very few conflicts that are always easily settled. Inside Gracie guards everything from Stamp, things like the kids socks, my shoe under the couch, that he as never shown any interest in. A few nights ago she was growling like mad every time he moved, he was in another room behind a closed door. Sometimes she seems to just get mad at him for existing. He never reacts, even the few times she's charged him he backs off. I'm not sure if he can hear her growls, unless they are face to face he doesn't seem to know she's upset.

I think some of it is tied to hunger and with the recent drop in temperature, I've increased her food and she has improved some, but it's hard to predict, sometimes she'll wolf down large amounts of food other times she'll just nibble and run off and leave her bowl full.

Gracie is good with the kids and the cats, but occasionally just goes nuts around dogs. She gets extra training when we board her and we've done some private training that has helped a lot with her manners with people. She did go nuts on one of the trainers mellow labs and they made some progress but it doesn't seem to carry over at home.

Anyone have any ideas for possible triggers or solutions? I wish I knew why she get so mad at him.

    Hi,

She is a Border Collie and they are so smart and a dog that needs a job. You can measure their exercise in hours not minutes. It could be she just gets pent up energy and it has to go somewhere, even though you have all the land these dogs need training and something to do daily. Plus it's hard to have an older dog that doesn't match the energy of the other one. I would suggest more intense training, if she can do all the basic commands, maybe look to a more advanced course of action. Please keep us posted.

I'm working on manners especially waiting patiently for food and doors. I'm also trying to reinforce basics like sit or down until released. I wish my husband would spend more time working on basics, she's getting better at catching the Frisbee but that doesn't keep her from tripping me when she bolts through the door. She does get a lot of exercise but probably not enough job with it. I'd love to find someone that can teach her and my husband how to heard. We have a lot of clearing to be done that would be well suited for goats if they would just stay in the fence.

How would you react when she goes into mad dog mode? Would you act differently when they are in separate rooms, she's hiding under the couch or in her crate growling or when she charges at him?

What you are doing is great, exercise and teaching her things, keep up with the basic training everyday, a few sessions a day is best. The more you can work her mind the better. Look in your area or surrounding area for any Border Collie Clubs, they maybe able to help you find a place to take her to see if she will herd. I'm lucky there is a farm near me that offers that. Hopefully you can find one too. The best thing when they go into "mad dog" mode is redirect the mind, get her working, go through a command routine, sit, stay, down get her focused on something else. If you can try to find an obedience program in your area that can do basic as well as advanced. Please keep me posted and good luck.
