Potty Training?

    Potty Training?

I have a question, I have been researching the best way to potty train a puppy and I am finding two different sides and one was wondering what your thoughts were. I have read that with crate training, they stay in for a hour and then out potty and then play time for 15-20 mins (depending on the age) then back in the crate, on the other side of that people say leave them out more often not put them in the crate as much except when you can't watch them etc. So I am a little confused at what is the best way to train our puppy. Would anyone share some opinions?

I have always used the crate as I'm housetraining a puppy or even an adult dog. There is no set time to leave them in the crate.  It depends on the age of the puppy and whether it's awake or asleep in the crate.  Housetraining takes time and diligence.  Ignore accidents.  Reward with treats and praise when they go outside.

I just found this for another member.

I agree with Jackie. I crate trained my Harley with great results. Eventually she got into a habit on knowing to alert us when she had to go. The biggest thing , whether you are create training them or not is to look for cues. Even though they may not know how to tell you that they need to go yet, they will show it. If your pup starts sniffing around or is looking around frantically, it is likely that they are looking for a spot to go.  Make sure to get them outside so that they start thinking, " I have to go! Time to go outside!" :) Good luck with potty training!

Thank you Jackie for the link.......it is so funny because that is from a book that we are talking about getting. Have you read the book? Is it worth getting?

Thanks Kaitlin........watching her for cues is not so easy......we have her cue for poo but for pee she just squats and go. The only thing that helps us right now is keeping her on a schedule.

Thanks to both of you for the tips.

Yes, the book is well worth getting!  I have it and love it.  I love Sophia Yin's books and articles.

I have a shihtzu named Nina (www.myfunpetlife.com/petlife1_dog_nina) and when I was potty training her I noticed that the moment she'd always go was in the morning when we just woke up. Since she slept in the bedroom with my wife and I and the door was closed for the night, what I'd do is when we woke up, first thing I'd take her to where she should go potty and waited until she was done with it. Then would reward her with a treat and would go enthusistic saying "Good girl!". I didn't take much for her to learn where to go.

Thanks........Lexi  always goes potty outside when we take her, that has never really been a issue. What our main issue is her potty in her crate, she has the smallest space we can give her but when she does pee in it it just doesn't seem to bother her to much. Drives us all crazy....lol.

Oh, I see. I bought the crate for Nina once but ended up never really using it. So unfortunately not much to share from that perspective. The only thing I actually did was to put her inside the crate to see how she'd behave and she seemed ok with it. But it was just for a minute or so, not for potty training.
