    Puppy pee

I just got a 9wk old miniature schnauzer puppy, he has not completed his shot series yet so I can't take him for walks (we live in a condo) He will go on his puppy pads on the balcony, but after he poops he won't urinate until he gets inside...no matter how long I stay out. Anyone know why?

Aloha- I am not a vet but I do believe this has to do with marking their territory.

Hi there. Cute a mini schnauzer pup!! Couple suggestions to break the cycle and reward the good behavior of peeing outside: 1. Get some of that special spray that removes all traces of urine smell and spray very well anyplace your pup has peed inside. 2. Take your pup to the balcony immediately after he wakes from a nap, after he eats, after he drinks and after you play with him. You want to catch him when he really needs to go so he will go on the balcony. Then praise him like crazy with tons of treats when he does. If you catch him in the act of peeing inside, don't say anything but pick him up (he will stop peeing if you pick him up - that's what they told me and it works) and bring him to balcony where he will finish the pee. then praise and treat. Basically all of this is "re-programming" him to show him how great it is if he pees outside.

Hello, very cute pup. You can also try putting a pee pad outside with pee on it already that may help him realize its ok to go outside too. What helped me too is try watching the clock, when he goes make note of the time, look at the clock and see when he goes again, this can help you predict when he goes. So if its a half hour between "pees" try to get him near the door and outside before he has a chance to go inside and always use the same phrase when you take him out. "Do you have to go OUT" being consistent is key! If you not consistent your are confusing. Good luck and keep up the good work. Schnauzers are very smart he will figure it out.

Thanks for the info... I may be confusing him by having a pad by the back door on the hard floor, I will put him there for his 3 and 5am breaks. He usually goes right away. It's just hard! Kona has only been with us 2 nights, and it's been pretty cold. NOW he wants to pull and play with his pad, bite our toes and pants legs, and cry (if in his crate) the moment he can't see us..... I have a baby !!! I love and hate it. ANY advice would be appreciated. The last time I had a puppy this young I was 13, and had 2 parents and a housekeeper to do the 'real' work. My other schnauzer was a rescue, so he was completely trained in every way. My husband wanted a puppy, so here we go.....

I would advise you to not be afraid to take your pup out and about while he's this age.  Despite the fact that he's not fully vaccinated.  There is a critical socialization period for puppies.  This critical period ends at about 16weeks of age.  The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviorists advises owners to socialize their puppies.  Take him to areas that are not frequented by a lot of unknown dogs.  Have him meet tons of new people.  Expose him to as much as you can.  You really can't socialize too much.  Enroll in a puppy class with a trainer that uses positive reinforcement methods.

Oh he's gone outside with me... Walmart , petco, the vet... I just can't put him on the ground to walk where other dogs have been. I keep him in his carrier or I hold him.  I am planning to enroll him next week in puppy kindergarten at Petsmart.... They only allow pups after the 2nd round of shots. He got them yesterday.

Read the position statement I posted.  Every puppy I've known and owned was taken and walked on the ground from day one.  I used common sense and didn't go to dog parks or other areas where stray dogs might frequent.  It takes some effort  but so does everything if it's done right. The unrealistic fear of disease is the cause of many behavioral problems that could  have been prevented.  Breeders and some veterinarians who encourage this fear don't have to live with an unsocialized dog.

Taking him three places is not enough.  Do some reading on early socialization.

We have a mini Schnauzer in our neighborhood --- they're so cute!

My husband wanted a puppy when we adopted a dog 3 years ago, but I insisted we get one already house-trained (that is, a little older) because it had been about 15 years since we had a young puppy, and I knew I wasn't up for the hard work!  Wink

Anyway, when we had an 8 week old puppy and we wanted to socialize him with minimal risk, we took him to several friends' houses and yards where we knew the dogs were vaccinated, yards safe and contained, etc.  do you have friends and family you could visit a lot so he sees lots of different people and places?
