    PROTECTOR WRONG PERSON

From my reading 9 - 15 months is the time that a puppy will stand its ground, become terriotial and protective of its home and owners.

Well, Freida at 10 months she is showing signs of this.  The problem is, in the morning when I get up  and I am up with the dogs for an hour or so, if my DH gets up, Freida goes growling at him when he comes in the living room where we aer.  It is not a nice growl.

She has a different relationship with him, rougher play and louder than with me.  She also body pushes him more, so that tells me she is trying to be dominant with him.

Needless to say my DH doesn't like this and I don't either.  I usually tell her to go lay down when she growls at him in the morning.  (and with him just getting up, he doesn't have anything nice to say, understandable)

    Any suggestions.

I'd suggest he build a bond with her that doesn't involve rough play. She may be pushing him because he encourages this type of behavior with his play style. Lots of men do that with dogs and for many dogs it's not a problem.  Sometimes it is a problem.

He should feed her some meals and spend time doing some simple obedience with her.  Could be she's doing some resource guarding and you are the resource.  Work on his entry into a room becoming the source of treats and praise.  When he leaves the good stuff ends.  If she feels she's being corrected when he appears you're reinforcing her negative feelings toward him.  If he has nothing nice to say to her, that too is reinforcing her negative feelings.

Jackie's advice is excellent. Jessie started growling and barking at dogs and people passing nearby when we went for walks when she was about 13 months old.  It's a natural phase that many adolescent dogs go through. I would immediately correct her (we had obedience trained her  and she knew "leave it." It only took a few corrections for her to stop the behavior.  So, maybe some obedience training is in order for Frieda?
