Peeing in the house, but not because he needs to go - related to collar

Peeing in the house, but not because he needs to go - related to collar

We've had our dog, Snoopy, three years this month, he was a shelter rescue at about 6 months, he's fixed. He's great with the kids (10, 7, and 19 months), he lets us know when he needs to go out. He's been through some obedience training, and is pretty good most of the time. He does like to grab the kids stuff animals sometimes, but they gave him stuffed animals at the shelter, so he thinks they are his, but he drops them when told to and goes back to his bone.

The big problem is when he comes back inside. We have an invisible fence system, and when we take his collar off anywhere but the porch or his kennel, he pees on the floor. He even does it when we take his regular collar with his tags for a bath.

He never does it when we put the collar on. Someone suggested he was getting zapped, but he's not, either putting it on or taking it off - we'd notice. I finally convinced my husband to pull up our carpet, because I was tired of the pee in the carpet lol (There were other reasons, too, but that helped convince him).

Thoughts? It's driving us crazy!  He never goes in the house, even if he's been inside all day, except when we take off the collar. He doesn't always like to go out in the winter, if there's a lot of snow - we think some fell off the roof and spooked him, he shakes when he hears it slide off the roof. So the issue isn't that he needs to go - it happens after he's been outside most of the day (when it's nice out, he loves to run around the yard and chase squirrels most of the day).

Has he been doing this ever since you got him or is this something new?

Something new, in the last few months, then he was ok for awhile, then it started up again. Usually the collar gets taken off on the porch, before we let him in and it isn't an issue. But sometimes, he gets passed the kids, and we have to take the collar off in the house.

Sounds like submissive urination. Do some google searches and read about it to see if it fits.

My Harry is a submissive urinator.  It's something we just have to manage.  One thing that can make these dogs urinate is when people hover over top of them.  Maybe you guys are standing and leaning over top of him to remove his collar?  Try squatting down to his side when you remove the collar.  We tell people to do this to greet Harry (leaning over to pet him would cause him to piddle) and it works really well.

Thanks. That sounds like exactly what it is - since we have to lean over him to take off the collar. I'll have us start kneeling down to do it. It's funny that he only does it in the house and not on the porch.

If that's all it takes, it'll be an easy fix.

The one page I found said it's rare for adult dogs to still do it, so hopefully with a little work, we'll get past this.

It is more common in puppies and younger dogs, and many dogs grow out of the behavior, however I don't know that I'd say it's rare in adult dogs, just uncommon.  Harry is 4.  He rarely piddles now, but that is only because we have a management system in place.  He still does occasionally piddle if he's overly excited or something frightens him.

Was he was corrected for peeing in the house?  It's common for dogs to associate punishment with a specific location and to tie that to the act of removing the collar.  You might try to use some positive reinforcement (give him a treat) when you remove the collar and he doesn't urinate.

Our daughter tried it today and so far so good! He didn't pee once! We could get used to this :) I hope it continues to be this easy of a fix!

    Thanks!!!
